Things to Do in Dartmoor: Top 5 Outdoor Activities & Hidden Gems

Dartmoor is a unique and captivating landscape and has so much to offer that you’re bound to find an outdoor activity to suit you. Whether you’re looking for a gentle day out, looking to take the family on an adventure to remember, seeking an idyllic riverside picnic, to wild scrambling on towering granite Tors – there’s something for everyone. All made even better with a wealth of geology and history to keep your brain wondering.

To give you an insider’s glimpse to Dartmoor, we’ve asked local guides Crag 2 Mountain to share some of their favourite ways to explore the area, as well as some hidden gems only a local would know about.

Enjoy a scenic walk from Hound Tor to Haytor

This journey is jam packed, a real honey pot walk! Start at Hound Tor, a maze of tall granite towers, myths and legends. You’ll soon work your way down to Greator via the Medieval Village, where you’ll get a glimpse of the stunning bluebell lawns if you time your trip correct.

If you’re feeling adventurous, Greator offers an exciting ridge line scramble. If scrambling is not your thing, continue down to a tranquil lunch spot at Becka Brook.

Continuing onto Haytor, you’ll find plentiful quarries to explore steeped with history.

Cycle Princetown to Burrator

This scenic cycling route offers a range of difficulty levels to suit all abilities. Primarily off-road using bridleways and minor roads, you’ll want a mountain bike to enjoy the route. At 20km long, the route is a great way to enjoy a variety of Dartmoor’s landscape.

dewerstone rocks

Multi-pitch Climbing at Dewerstone Rocks

Climb the impressive, towering rocky outcrops set in Shaugh Prior woodlands. Usually in climbable conditions year-round, Dewerstone rocks is a fantastic low to middle-grade venue. With generally sound rock, good protection and fantastic flora and fauna within the woodland, Dewerstone rocks makes for an excellent visit.

Find full information on the climbing area with UKC.

Caving at Pridhamsleigh Cavern

Explore our local cave system, learn about the cave and its history. The cave is perfect for beginners and those who have never been caving before, with big open caverns and challenges along the way for those who wish to test themselves. This is a great opportunity to experience total darkness with no light in the cave other than head torches. When you turn these off you are plunged into complete darkness.

rock adventure session

Rock Adventure Session at Hound Tor

The Rock Adventure Session offered by Crag 2 Mountain is ideal for families and children to have a go at Rock Climbing. Enjoy rock climbing, abseiling, and weaselling.

Weaselling through short tunnels in the Tors makes this activity super fun for the little ones. They will quickly become a weaselling champion!

Our Favourite Hidden Gems

Swell Tor Quarry

A scenic walk from Princetown will take you along the disused railway to discover Swell Tor Quarry. An impressive site that houses excess casts that were crafted for the old London Bridge.

Greator Rocks

Great for a friendly scramble via an enjoyable walk from Hound Tor via the Medieval Village.

Weaselling at Bone Hill

Weaselling is a local activity squeezing through holes and tunnels in the Tors, Bone Hill begin one of the best locations. Just down the road is Widecombe in the moor with lovely idyllic pubs and cafes. Whilst you're out, don’t forget to keep an eye out for letterboxes.

luckey tor

Luckey Tor

With a number of routes to Luckey Tor, there are plenty of beautiful options to choose from. We recommend choosing one of a couple of paths that lead to the beautiful River Dart which has many excellent swimming spots.
