If you’re thinking about getting into stand-up paddle boarding, or perhaps recently just purchased your first SUP, you may be wondering where you can actually take it? If this is you, then you’ve come to the right place!

In order to paddle freely along UK waterways, usually, you must first apply for a license. Whilst initially this may seem daunting, it's actually a straightforward process. We've put together this article to help you find everything you need to know about paddle board licensing, rights, and where you can go.

Why Do I Need A License?

Although not all waterways in the UK require a permit, with most canals and rivers being maintained by local authorities, the chances of you running into places that do require a permit are very high.

Not only will having a license widely extend where you’re able to paddle, but the license fees help authorities care for and maintain the water you’re paddling on.

How Do I Apply?

England:

If you’re living in England, one of the best and easiest ways to obtain a license is to apply for the British Canoeing membership. With this membership, a waterways license is included, along with insurance, discounts and more!

You'll find all the waterways the British Canoeing membership allows access to here.

Scotland:

In Scotland, you have the right to roam. This means that you are able to freely access most bodies of water without having a license (as long as you do so in a responsible manor). Although a license isn’t required, it is still recommended to become a member of Canoe Scotland which will give you access to benefits such as special offers and civil liability insurance.

Wales:

Much like in England, you’re going to need a waterways license if you’re planning on paddling most rivers and canals in Wales. Canoe Wales is the easiest way to obtain a license and offers similar benefits as British Canoeing.
