Salomon QST Echo 106 Skis 2024

Based on the popular QST 106 the new 2024 Echo 106 builds on the same super stable ride and floaty handling but adds a lighter construction that makes it the perfect backcountry tool to go hunting for those perfect turns and lines. Cork Damplifier inserts and Basalt fibres keeps the light karuba/poplar core feeling reassuringly damp and planted when the conditions get rough and adds stability at speed. Put a tour binding on for a go anywhere do anything package or pair them with a regular alpine binding for a playful lightweight resort freeride ski that handles any condition or terrain that gets thrown at them. This is an early release available in limited numbers in only a few select retailers.

Terrain Type
Deeper snow is where it will shine, so it wants bowls and powder fields rather than steep, technical chutes, but the shape means it will handle all kinds of terrain with easy handling.

Skier Type
Skiers who want a ski light enough to take them far, but with the width and shape to really enjoy the descent when the snow is fresh and deep. Definitely more playful than powerful, it’s for skiers want to enjoy the turns with a surfy feel.

Overview

Shape
It is 106mm under foot with plenty of rocker both tip and tail tells you this ski is going to be good in soft snow. Having set back contact points and a bit of camber at the waist means it playful and manoeuvrable on firm snow too.

Rocker
Freeride Profile. tip and tail rocker uses camber underfoot for grip and response; the rocker aids turn initiation and release.

Core
Karuba/Poplar Full Woodcore. Karuba is one of the lightest woods used in ski constuction to keep the overall weight down yet retain stability, while poplar enhances performance and provides the power good skiers need while again keeping the overall weight down.

Construction
Recycled Double Sidewall construction uses an extra layer of sidewall under foot that adds extra power and stability.

Key Features

Basalt Superlight Fibers
Basalt is an extruded fiber made from melted down igneous Basalt rock. Basalt is lightweight and helps to add power to the core, even more so than traditional fiberglass, and has more elasticity than carbon giving it excellent dampening qualities for better snow contact for when things get rough.

Cork Damplifier
Cork is three times more absorbing than Koroyd. Using it in the tip of the ski enables a high level of vibration absorption and dampening with even less weight.

Sustainability

EB tester’s comments: Toby (Covent Garden) Amazingly well balanced, very precise flex and feel. I was pleasantly surprised by the high-performance level for such a lightweight ski.
