Hintertux Staff Ski Test - Day 3
The weather wasn't so kind to us today but that was never going to stop us enjoying testing skis on a mountain.
First thing in the morning the snow wasn't as firm as on previous days and the off-piste had become heavier, maybe not as nice to ski but still excellent conditions to test in as it really brings the characteristics of each ski.
There was no mistaking our staff in the whiteout conditions!
Even though they aren't the widest skis in our range, the women's Volkl Essenza skis were proving to be excellent. We already knew they ruled on firm groomed snow and now we were very pleasantly surprised how well they coped with the chopped heavy stuff.
Eric and Pete from Salomon UK joined us today for some on-hill training and an evening range presentation. Skiing with the testers using the X-Drive models showed exactly how versatile they are but also what great value and just why they are class leaders. This wasn't a surprise as they are based on some existing models that are already top-sellers. The Rocker 100 is a brand new ski for 14/15, a super-fun, lively twin-rockered and twin-tipped and in the soft snow it ripped! Stable and solid, but full of life and energy – this is going to be a popular ski. Our only problem is where do we classify it, all-mountain, freeride or freestyle? So many people will appreciate this ski!
The weather closed in by 3 o'clock, forcing us to finish testing an hour early, but this gave Salomon the chance to add some extra elements to their evening training session with a presentation and a round-table discussion covering ideas and feedback.
The clouds were still blanketing the mountains as the light faded, the light rain keeping the valley a vibrant green and tempting us with the prospect of fresh snow in the morning. Off to bed with dreams of powder and the thoughts of testing fat skis tomorrow.
