Andy Johnson

Andy is a keen paddleboarder based in Manchester.

He properly started paddling at 17 after realising that the ‘traditional’ A-level college wasn't for him. He decided to pursue his long time passion for the outdoors and went to a dedicated outdoor college to complete an Extended Diploma in Sport and Outdoor Activities. Since then he has worked as an outdoor instructor for many years, taking clients on anything from beginner paddleboard courses to canoeing expeditions.

Working in outdoor pursuits, both land-based and water-based, opened up a world of opportunities for Andy to work with a variety of participants ranging from primary school children to corporate team building days, with this he has regularly witnessed the importance of outdoor education particularly for young people and how experiences outside of the classroom can often benefit the ones struggling the most.

One of his favourite paddle spots is Loch an Eilein in Scotland right at the foot of the Cairngorm Mountains, largely due to the scenic surroundings but also because the little island in the middle has a small ruin on it which he loves to explore! Closer to home he loves a local paddle at his favourite spot on the reservoirs of Rivington (aka ‘Mini-Lake District’).

In Andy's words, "The sense of freedom and peace that comes with being outdoors brings me back again and again". Many of his favourite mornings have been spent paddling across a flat, mirror-like, water with the sun just sneaking up over the hills because "When I’m out on an adventure, I’m not thinking about work or home life, just focused on what I’m doing at the time".
