Exploring the Lake District by paddleboard

For years, I had dreamt of traversing the full length of the Lake District by paddleboard.

Growing up in Cumbria, I explored crags, tarns and fells by bike, on foot and by kayak. Yet a complete south-to-north crossing had always escaped me. Only when inflatable paddleboards became lighter and more compact did the idea feel possible.

Now living in Chamonix, I am never short of mountains, but the pull of the Lakes is always strong. So, with my old friend Ed, I planned a two-day journey linking water and land, from Windermere in the south to Bassenthwaite in the north.

Final thoughts

Paddleboarding in the Lake District is rewarding but demanding, especially in winter. Preparation, fitness and the right kit are essential for both safety and enjoyment.
