ROCK CLIMBING ROPES

Our range of climbing ropes comes from top brands Mammut, Edelrid and Beal, and we have something to suit every style of climbing.

Single or Double?  Single ropes are used for sports climbing, top roping and traditional climbing where pitches follow a relatively straight line and gear placements will not cause unnecessary rope drag.  Thicker diameter (10 – 10.5mm) ropes are typically longer lasting and reassuringly grippy in belay plates, making them ideal for top roping or working routes.  The new breed of skinny single ropes (8.9 – 10mm) are very slick and lightweight.  Double ropes should be used in pairs and are essential for long, traditionally protected routes where they can be clipped independently to avoid rope drag.  Two ropes offer maximum safety and the advantage of being able to fix long abseils.

What length?  30 and 40 metre length climbing ropes are great for indoor climbing and the shortest outdoor climbs, saving weight and rope faff.  50m will suffice for most trad climbs and many sport crags.  60m is ideal to cover most UK sports routes, giving you the extra length to allow lowering off on a 25m pitch.  It’s also good for winter or ice climbing giving the longest possible pitch length and abseil potential.  70m is a good idea for those big Euro sports routes.

A dry treatment is essential for winter climbing and alpinism as it prevents the rope absorbing water, freezing and thus becoming dangerous and unmanageable.
