Tecnica Men's Plasma S GORE-TEX Walking Shoe Review

Tecnica is probably best known for their ski boots, but they recently branched out into the hiking market with their Forge boots and Plasma shoes.

Featuring Tecnica's Custom Adaptive Shape (C.A.S.) technology, these new heat-mouldable shoes incorporate comfort and support maximised in a fit that's second to none.

Waterproof, abrasion resistant and with a Vibram Megagrip sole, is the Plasma S really a solution to all our problems?

We gave a pair to Andy from the Web Team to put it through its paces, hiking and clambering in the hills of The Peak District.

INITIAL THOUGHTS ABOUT THE SHOE

The first thing I noticed about the shoe is the rather futuristic and striking design that ensures it fits comfortably on the shelf against its competitors. The colours are simple and aren’t outrageously bright compared to other walking shoes often found in Europe.

Considering the number of features that are packed into this shoe, it feels light and strong (a combination that isn’t often found together) with a construction that feels solid and reliable.

Custom Adaptive Shape (C.A.S.)

Possibly the most crucial part of buying the Plasma S shoes and what sets it apart from its competitors is the fitting.

The process mimics the already established ski boot fitting process where the outer and the sole are both heated. However, after heating, both sections are placed inside two inflatable bags which use high-pressure to force the arch and heel of the shoe into the desired shape.

A simple process that only took 20 minutes meant that an already comfortable shoe is now fine-tuned to meet my foot.

GORE-TEX EXTENDED COMFORT

Designed for warm weather, this particular GORE-TEX technology is not only waterproof but has outstanding climate comfort and heat loss. This fabric is ideal for anyone who wants to complete summer walks but likes the security of having a waterproof shoe.

VIBRAM PLASMA SOLE WITH MEGAGRIP RUBBER

It's always comforting when I see the yellow octagon on the sole of a sole as I know straight away the soles will grip well and will pass the test of time. These shoes come with Vibram's 'Megagrip' sole which is developed for walkers who frequently encounters slippery surfaces but still demand a strong grip.

HOW DID IT PERFORM?

Tecnica Plasma Fitting

FOOT PROTECTION - 9/10

It’s safe to say that Tecnica has chosen to go for a more supportive and protective shoe rather than aiming to save every gram. Tough uppers and thick cushioning in the heel means your foot is protected above and below with the added benefit of GORE-TEX fabric in the uppers to help keep your feet dry and cool. Having the shoes moulded certainly helps protect your feet by minimising movement and prevent blisters.

TRACTION - 8/10

When it comes to manufacturers picking a material for their shoes, the Vibram soles have been a no brainer for many years. However, their ‘MEGGAGRIP’ rubber is another step up when it comes to grip. Tested through rocky terrain and across slightly submerged stepping stones, I was pleasantly surprised when my foot didn’t slip where I normally expect it to.

STABILITY - 8/10

Obviously, if stability was high on your preferences, you might prefer looking at the Plasma’s big brother the Forge boot but for a shoe, it certainly doesn’t lack solidity. A stiffer sole and strong arch support help to prevent unwanted movement.

COMFORT - 9/10

It’s not uncommon for these boots to fit straight out the box but for that extra level of comfort, it’s well worth getting them moulded. A well as the heel and arch, the insole is also moulded separately for added reassurance and support. It comes as no surprise then, that as soon as you set off, they feel like a shoe I’ve been wearing for years and after a full day across The Peaks, can confidently say I had no hot spots or blisters.

It's worth noting that even if it’s not quite right, they can always be remoulded again if required.

WEIGHT - 7/10

I weighed these at home a few days after initial testing and found they came up as 860g for a pair (size 8). Which isn’t the lightest walking shoe on the market but considering the strength, build quality and technology built into the shoe, is nothing to complain about.

SENSITIVITY - 8/10

One of the benefits of having the insole moulded is the increase of contact from the foot to the shoe. It’s the same reason why most modern ski boots recommend coming with a custom insole as well, as greater contact improves sensitivity and ultimately improves the overall experience.

 MATERIALS - 10/10

From the GORE-TEX uppers with a TPU reinforcement to the incredibly grippy Vibram rubber soles, Tecnica have certainly gone all-out to ensure that the Plasmas have the best materials available. Even the self-locking lace loops are made from Kevlar!

AESTHETICS - 9/10

I usually opt for a shoe that is perhaps understated and less flashy than others so these are ideal in terms of looks. Neutral black means it matches any outfit while the sections of red help give the shoe a bit of character without forcing the walking community to be blinded by your bright shoes the whole time. The style mimics a more futuristic shoe rather than sticking with a classic approach which matches the futuristic technology which is incorporated.

Pros & cons

PROS

  • Custom-fit
  • Supportive construction
  • Very grippy sole
  • Waterproof
  • High-quality materials
  • Futuristic look

Cons

  • Slightly higher price than others but packed with technology & includes a customised insole
  • Stiffer sole for a walking shoe but would work well for clambering over rocks
  • Thin laces might be an issue on the hands in colder weather

OVERALL VERDICT - 9/10

Tecnica Plasma Technology

Tecnica have really pulled it out of the bag with the Plasma S, creating a walking shoe that not only compares highly to existing favourites but in some respects, beating them as well.

The Plasma S shoe is certainly worth considering for people who want a more personalized fit in their hiking shoes while also ensuring they are getting the most suitable support with the best materials available.
