Getting your period before a camping or hiking trip can feel daunting. But after you've experienced it the first time you'll realise it's not a big deal. There are a range of ways you can manage your period and enjoy your trip into nature at any time of the month.

Menstrual product options

You have a couple of main options when it comes to period products. You can go down the reusable route or the classic disposable products if you feel more comfortable using those.

Menstrual cup or disk
These flexible silicone products are inserted to catch menstrual blood. There are many options on the market based on your needs. Once you buy one you can reuse it for years.

Unlike a tampon, you can keep a menstrual cup or disk in for up to 12 hours. When you remove it simply tip the blood into a hole.

After you empty the cup or disk rinse it with clean water if possible or wipe it with a tissue. Ensure you have clean hands before inserting or removing. Before each new cycle make sure you boil or sanitise your cup or disk.

Period pants or reusable pads
Another great reusable option if you aren't keen on a cup or disk. You use these products exactly as you would a typical disposable pad. These are great choices if you won't have access to soap and water to clean your hands when out on the trail. Depending on how long you are out for, period pants may be difficult to change (although some brands do sell pairs with poppers, so you don't have to get fully undressed). You will also have to carry used pairs in your pack until you are able to wash them (either in a machine or hand wash back at camp). These can be a great option as a backup to a cup, disk or tampon to avoid leaking.

Tampons or pads
If you are more comfortable with classic disposable period care, these will also work when out on the trail. Just ensure you have clean hands when changing a tampon. Don't bury disposable period products. Bring a waste bag with you to put used products in.

Our tips for hiking or camping on your period

  • For clean-ups during your period, you can use a portable bidet or some brands sell sprays which turn any toilet paper or cloths into an on-the-go wet wipe.

  • Some brands sell trousers which zip to allow for easy changing when out on the trail. Even a side zip like on the Mountain Equipment Tupilak trousers can make changing period products easier.

  • Don't feel guilty if you need to take it easier or want to postpone your trip. Periods can vary greatly person to person, so do what works best for you.
