How long do ski boots last
For generations, young Brits have headed to the Alps for their first taste of freedom. A season brings adventure, lifelong friends, language skills, and the kind of confidence that only comes from living abroad. Many of today’s snow industry leaders started this way.
Brexit ended the right to work freely in the EU. Before 2016, around 25,000 Brits worked winter seasons in France alone. Now, most Alpine employers prefer EU passport holders. Informal cash-in-hand jobs are gone, and without the right visa, you risk being banned from the EU.
Yes, France is your best option. Employers must advertise jobs to EU candidates first, but roles needing native English speakers can be opened to Brits. The company then secures your visa and adds you to their French payroll. It’s more admin and cost, but still possible. Accommodation through operators is a big bonus, as rentals in resorts are increasingly scarce.
Austria and Italy are more challenging, with fewer options available to non-EU passport holders. Cross-border roles, such as transferring driving from Geneva into France, are not currently viable.
Look beyond Europe. Canada and Japan are often more straightforward.
In Europe, aim for France and secure a visa through your employer.
Apply early and go directly to ski businesses.
Back the campaign. Tell your MP that seasonal work matters.
Take the leap. You won’t regret it.
