Packing for your ski holiday

A ski holiday is one of the most exciting winter getaways, but packing for it can be a challenge. Between technical clothing, bulky equipment and everything you need for evenings in the resort, there is a lot to remember and organise. Like how do you even pack a pair of skis? This guide covers what to bring, which luggage works best and how to actually pack it all for a smoother journey to the mountains.

Ski holiday checklist

What do you need to pack for a ski holiday?

Start with the kit that will keep you warm, dry and comfortable on the slopes, then add relaxed clothing and a few easy-to-forget essentials.

Ski essentials
Good ski clothing works as a system. A waterproof outer layer protects you from snow and wind, while breathable base and mid layers help regulate your temperature throughout the day.

One well-fitting, waterproof set should cover the trip.

Base layers

Pack at least two sets so you can rotate them. Choose moisture-wicking fabric like merino or synthetic rather than cotton.

Mid layers

Bring one or two insulated layers.

Ski socks

Take enough for each ski day. Choose actual ski socks rather than standard one, as they are warmer and less bulky inside your boots. Top tip: Take a thinner pair of socks for colder days, and a thicker pair for warmer days - wearing thicker socks on cold days can restrict blood flow to the foot, making you colder.

Pack one waterproof pair of ski gloves and a buff or neck warmer. Spare glove liners can be useful in very cold weather.

Make sure both fit comfortably together before you travel.

Bringing your own kit is the best choice for comfort and familiarity or you can rent kit at the resort to travel lighter or if you are a beginner. If you are heading into the backcountry, don't forget your safety equipment. Include a transceiver, shovel and probe, and make sure you know how to use them. Top tip: before heading off on your ski trip head in-store with your ski boots to make sure they fit correctly, nothing ruins a day on the slopes than sore feet.

When you’re not skiing

Two skiers in blue outfits walk up a snowy mountain slope, with fog rolling over pine trees and a ski lift in the background.

Other essentials

Mountain sunlight can be intense, even on cloudy days, because snow reflects UV rays.

Pack:

  • sunglasses

  • high-factor sun cream

  • SPF lip balm

Don't forget toiletries, any medication, travel documents, chargers and plug adaptors. A small reusable water bottle and a few snacks are also useful for travel days and time on the slopes.

Top tip: make sure you have travel insurance that specifically covers snowsports

Final thoughts

A little organisation before you leave can make your ski holiday much more enjoyable. Check the weather forecast, review your transport provider’s baggage policy and lay everything out before it goes into a bag.

If you are unsure about clothing, equipment or fit, head in-store for advice before your trip.
