In some European resorts, the answer is now yes, by law. In others, helmets may not be legally required for adults, but they are strongly recommended by resorts, ski schools and safety organisations.

While a helmet is not a guarantee against injury, they are designed to reduce the risk and severity of many head impacts. Particularly the more common knocks, falls and collisions that can happen on busy pistes.

Italy

Helmets are mandatory for all skiers on Italian designated ski slopes from Winter 2025. Ski tourers should also note that they must by carrying a helmet while ascending alongside pistes as well. Helmets must be CE-certified, and non-compliance can lead to fines or lift pass suspension.

Austria

Helmet rules are set by federal states. In many ski regions, helmets are compulsory for children and young people up to 15, but not generally mandatory for adults. Tyrol and Vorarlberg are exceptions without a legal requirement, although ski schools may still insist on helmets for children.

Poland

Helmets are compulsory for children up to 16 years old.

Slovakia

Helmets are compulsory for children up to 15 years old.

Slovenia and Croatia

Helmets are compulsory for children up to 14 years old.

France

Helmets are not generally mandatory by law for recreational skiers, although they are widely recommended and may be required by ski schools, especially for children.

Switzerland

Helmets are not generally mandatory by law, but helmet use is very common and strongly encouraged.

Germany

Helmets are not generally mandatory by law, but are recommended by ski and instructor organisations.

Spain and Andorra

Helmets are generally not compulsory on pistes, but are strongly recommended; some guidance notes helmet requirements for certain off-piste activities.

Norway and Sweden

Helmets are not generally compulsory by national law, but safety expectations are high, and children may be refused access to certain lifts, lessons or activities without one.
