The beauty of a multi-day hike

A multi-day hike is a journey on foot that lasts over 24 hours and includes an overnight stop. It might involve completing an established trail end-to-end, tackling a section of it, or simply heading out on a route of your own. Your overnight stay could be camping (in a tent or bivvy) or hut-to-hut, where you stay in a hut, hostel or B&B. Some even ferry your gear between them, so you only need to carry a day pack.

Multi-day hiking is highly customisable; you can create an adventure just for you. But it does require more preparation than a standard day hike, so here are some tips to get you started.

Knowledge

Knowledge & skills

Your day hiking knowledge will be transferable here, but you'll still want to brush up on certain skills.

Navigation: Having a GPX file, navigation apps and signposts on well-marked trails are useful. We also recommend having basic map reading skills. There are plenty of courses and online guides to brush up on your skills. If a phone or device is part of your navigational tools, you will need to consider how to keep it charged. It's also always a good idea to take a paper backup.

Planning: Make sure you know where you're going, where you'll stay and what supplies you'll need. Make sure to tell someone your plans in case something goes wrong.

Flexibility: You should be willing to turn back if something goes wrong.

Emergencies: Having a first aid kit and knowing how to use it is vital. Make sure to tell someone your plans in case something goes wrong.
