Is it time for a new helmet?

Your climbing helmet is there to protect you from falling rocks and unexpected impacts. Regular use, accidental knocks and environmental exposure all contribute to wear over time.

In this guide, we'll explain how long climbing helmets typically last, what signs to look for during inspections and how to prolong the lifespan of your helmet.

This guide was written in collaboration with the expert instructors at Plas y Brenin.

Signs you should replace your climbing helmet

Even if your helmet hasn't reached its recommended lifespan, you should inspect it regularly for signs of damage.

Things to look out for include:

  • Deep scratches or cracks in the outer shell

  • Discolouration or signs of deterioration

  • Damaged webbing or straps

  • Any impact from falling rocks or being dropped onto a hard surface

A useful tip is to drag your fingernail across the shell of the helmet. This can help you identify scratches that are deeper than they first appear.
