Our favourite European multi-day hikes

Europe offers some of the most rewarding multi-day hikes in the world, with routes that cross alpine peaks, coastal cliffs, and remote wilderness. From iconic trails like the Tour du Mont Blanc to lesser-known paths through the Balkans, these journeys combine challenge, scenery, and cultural depth in equal measure.

We're highlighting some of our favourite multi-day hikes across Europe, alongside first-hand insights from our team who have completed these routes. Read about our favourite multi-day hikes that are closer to home in the UK.

“Book well in advance. Refuges fill up fast. We only booked eight weeks before, which meant some very long days when accommodation wasn’t available. It added to the challenge but made the achievement even more rewarding.” – Jon, Chester store manager

The Peaks of the Balkans Trail

Alex, our store manager at Covent Garden, spent 9 days exploring the Peaks of the Balkans Trail. Read about his full adventure.

“Our initial plan was to mix wild camping with sleeping in guest houses, but it turned out to be a lot more challenging than we thought. There are restrictions in some areas, local wildlife to contend with, and Plav was the only place to pick up supplies on the route. In the end, we decided to stay with the locals. It’s affordable and offers an opportunity to learn about their culture and sample traditional cuisine.” – Alex, Covent Garden store manager

Kungsleden

Rushing mountain river flanked by rocky banks and greenery, under a cloudy sky with snow-capped peaks in the distance.

"If you haven’t got bags of annual leave to use, the Kungsleden can be easily tackled in smaller week-long chunks. I hiked the Abisko to Nikkaluokta section, which took 5 days. It is worth taking extra food and supplies on this stretch. While you can buy food at the mountain huts, hiking over 20km a day over rolling terrain is hungry work, and the huts are infrequent in some sections.  A water purifier is also a must, as collecting water from streams each day saves having several litres of water in your pack weight. Come prepared for wintery weather in this more northernmost section, even in summer. I hiked this section in July, and there was still a fair amount of snow around even then."  - Kerry, Digital marketing manager

Jon Davies, Store Manager

My life outdoors started over thirty years ago, walking and camping with my dad in Snowdonia. I have since added snowboarding, mountain biking and fell running to my repertoire. I've been part of the Ellis Brigham family for 11 years now and love kitting people out for their next adventure, no matter how big or small.

My passion for the outdoors led me to join Ellis Brigham almost 8 years ago. Over the past 20 years, I have explored many mountain ranges in Europe and Asia. From hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc, wild camping in Romania, via ferrata in the Dolomites, ice climbing in Rjukan or conquering new heights on Pik Lenin.

I have always loved being outside and since I began working in the outdoor industry as a teenager I have been trying to find as many excuses to get out in the mountains as possible. Fortunately, working at Ellis Brigham has given me plenty of opportunity to escape the office and test some awesome gear, from trail running shoes to belay devices. Most of the time I can be found kicking around on my local fells in the Lakes, but I am lucky enough to have climbed and skied in some amazing places over the years, including Morocco, Norway and the Alps.
