THE FUTURE OF RAINWEAR IS HERE
The North Face created FUTURELIGHT™ in response to requests from their global athlete team for increased performance and breathability from their waterproof gear.
FUTURELIGHT™ was born in the mountains out of specific requests from The North Face global athlete team looking for increased performance and breathability in their waterproof gear.
FUTURELIGHT™ is a new kind of technology. The North Face tapped into a production method called nanospinning, which creates nanosized fibres that allow superior air permeability while maintaining waterproofness. This revolutionary nanospining allows for variable thickness within the single piece of fabric enabling freedom of movement and softness to touch – eliminating constrictions for more movement.
They then found a unique lamination process to attach those nanosized fibres to fabrics without sacrificing breathability, waterproofness, or durability. In the end, they have created a revolutionary process and an innovative fabric that can be adapted to meet the needs of any outdoor enthusiast.
The philosophy and responsibility of The North Face is to minimise its environmental footprint while maximising the performance of the product. This project is no different. They are using recycled fabrics, non-fluorinated DWR and production partners with a shared commitment to sustainability, responsible manufacturing, and eco-driven innovation.
FUTURELIGHT™ will change what you expect from waterproof outerwear gear.
FUTURELIGHT™ - Technology
Breathable: Breathes as hard as you do.
FUTURELIGHT™ is made using over 200,000 tiny nozzles to create an ultra-thin layer called a nanomembrane. That’s how air moves through the fabric while water is kept out.
The beauty of this superior airflow is that it removes the need to de-layer, which can be a difficult task, when travelling or climbing across technical terrain. It also allows you to retain protection from wind, rain and snow without overheating.
World-Class Alpinist David Gottler:
"there's much less hot and cool temperature fluctuations from sweating to cooling so it's much drier. Breathability varies a lot on your activity and the moisture in the air - but in every way I've tried it I've been surprised how well FUTURELIGHT™ breathes and works. It's so effective."
Waterproof: Built to weather all the weather.
The North Face worked with an independent third party, UL: a world-renowned, independent safety science company with more than 120 years of expertise.
The results unequivocally demonstrated that The North Face have created a new standard in waterproof outerwear. It’s innovative fabric technology that’s independently certified.
Reigning Freeride Word Tour Champion Markus Eder:
"I wore FUTURELIGHT™ prototypes in every Freeride World Tour competition last season and all the other days on the slopes and backcountry too, the same jacket and pants. I never needed or wanted to change them after around 200 days on snow."
Soft: Feels so soft, it’s like a second skin.
FUTURELIGHT™ fabrics are designed with different weave structures, making them more thin and nimble, not stiff and crunchy. Without sacrificing how it protects you FUTURELIGHT™ is the hardest working, breathable-waterproof fabric with the softest hand feel from The North Face.
FUTURELIGHT™ products are made using new textile production standards and processes that is state-of-the-art. The Nanospinning process creates a unique set of performance benefits, including air permeability and light-weightness.
Durable: Tested in the world’s toughest conditions.
The North Face athletes operate in some of the most punishing and unforgiving weather and terrain on the planet. And they need to be able to depend on their gear to keep them warm, dry and safe whatever the conditions.
FUTURELIGHT™ breathable waterproof technology was tested by an elite athlete team in some of the toughest settings on Earth. From the top of Mt. Everest to the first-ever ski down Lhotse; it was even tested for 100 days straight.
Sustainable: Being in nature can be good for nature.

They are using recycled fabrics, non-fluorinated DWR and production partners with a shared commitment to sustainability, responsible manufacturing, and eco-driven innovation. From start to finish, The North Face have created a new sustainably-led fabric that will shape the future of the outdoors.
FUTURELIGHT™ is the largest product innovation effort ever at The North Face. It’s an athlete insight turned into a moment of truth. It’s moving the world of exploration whilst making the planet a better place.
The re-engineered Dryzzle Jacket is a reliable, seam-sealed three-layer shell for active adventures in wet and windy conditions.
Made using FUTURELIGHT™ - a customisable breathable-waterproof fabric engineered using nano-spinning technology that adds air permeability to a waterproof membrane for the first time. On top of this, it's made from recycled polyester and impregnated with a non-PFC durable water repellent, so it has excellent sustainability credentials too. It features a stretch-knit backer that, unlike other shells, doesn't feel cool on bare skin. It also features an attached, fully adjustable hood, Velcro® sleeve cuffs and snap-locking storm-flap to lock in body heat and keep wind and rain at bay.
