  • Phil Crowhurst - Store Manager

    Skiing & Running Expert

    Store: CAMBRIDGE

Phil's first skiing experience came at the age of 19, when he went to Glen Coe in Scotland to do a 3 month BASI instructor training course. During the next three years spent at Chester Univeristy doing a Sports Science degree, he managed to get out to the Swiss Alps a couple of times and rapidly fell in love with the sport.

As soon as university was over Phil lined up a season in Meribel, which was unfortunately cut short by an injury picked up skiing off piste (you can ask him what happened if you see him in store – too gruesome for the website!) These days Phil still manages to get out on the mountain for 2-3 weeks per year.

Whilst at Chester University Phil also got into running, to help keep fitness levels up and secure a place in the Uni hockey team. This also became a bit of an obsession and he's now got several full marathons and a Highland Ultra marathon under his belt. He tries to run every day, and if training for an ultra can rack up over 100 miles per week. So if you're looking for ski gear, or running kit, or both, come in and talk to Phil.

    Favourite Place/Resort:

Jungfrau, Switzerland. For skiing, my favourite resort is Jungfrau region in Switzerland. Apart from the fact that I Know the resort very well, it’s great if you like fast downhill skiing, with a huge variety of terrain. The powder is particularly good. If I manage to get away for a run, I like the Brecon Beacons. The scenery is beautiful and there’s a huge scope for differing terrain.

  • Simon Pitman

    Skiing Expert

    Store: CAMBRIDGE

Simon's first experience of skiing was at the age of 10 when he went to Lapland with his family. He was hooked on the sport immediately. Throughout his school years he went on many ski trips and mountaineering trips, including the Welsh 3000's challenge and summiting 4000m peaks in both France and Switzerland.

As soon as he left school, Simon started working in outdoor retail as a quick way of gaining some money for his next ski trip. From there, he realised that he enjoyed the outdoor retail world and the people he met along the way. Since then he has been striving to increase his knowledge of equipment both off and on the mountain.

In 2013, Simon had the opportunity to spend a month in Montana, he trained with local experts, skiing off piste. This has enabled him to combine his passions of both skiing and mountaineering with touring.

These days Simon aims to get 2 weeks a year skiing, and whatever time he can find in the summer to go mountaineering and wild camping in Britain and the Alps.

    Favourite resort:
Big Sky, Montana. "It's the largest resort in the US but very quiet and very friendly. The south face's chutes, bowls, and forests have some of the best lines. And it's the only place I've seen 30 inches of snow fall overnight!"
  • Ryan Jackson

    Skiing & Travel Expert

    Store: CAMBRIDGE

Ryan started skiing at the age of four, when his parents took him to Westendorf, Austria.

Since that first time, Ryan has become addicted, getting out on the slopes at least once a year. Ryan realised getting the right equipment would be vital, and has since been striving to give everything a go, from testing skis and boots to trying out goggles and gloves.

Following the completion of his degree in sports and exercise management, Ryan spent a year travelling, including backpacking up Australia's east coast, camping from New Orleans to New York, finishing with a season in the Portes du Soleil region.

    Favourite resort:
La Grand Bornand, France. "I love it because it's a very quiet resort off the beaten tracks. It also has some amazing freeride areas when the snow is good."
  • Emily Dutton

    Skiing & Travel Expert

    Store: CAMBRIDGE

Emily spent most of her early years skiing over in the states at Heavenly, Lake Tahoe and Vail, Breckenridge and Keystone, Colorado. She first started skiing at age 8 and hasn’t missed a season since. She later found a way to keep her passion up at home by visiting Bassingbourn dry slope when not in the mountains.

As well as a passion for skiing, Emily also loves to travel, a family trait she’s inherited. Having been well travelled in her youth she then took a solo round the world trip, stopping off in 14 different countries and went scuba diving and skiing along the way. Her next aim is to visit all of the continents, only two more to go! Her favourite spots so far include Cambodia, Japan and New Zealand.

    Favourite resort:
Lake Louise, Banff / La Plagne, France / Lake Tahoe, USA. "Lake Louise - always a great spot for great conditions and stunning scenery. La Plagne – so much to explorer with the combined Les Arcs pass and some great off piste to find if you know where to look. Heavenly, Lake Tahoe – a great family friendly resort with something for all abilities, with some amazing views!"
  • Malcolm Miller

    Trekking & Camping Expert

    Store: CAMBRIDGE

Malcolm has been trekking in the UK for many years, spending a lot of time with youth club camps in the Lake District. In 2000 he went to America during which he trekked in the White mountains of Vermont. Malcolm also love to get out on his mountain bike.

Spending most of his time in the Lake District, but equally at home all around the UK, Malcolm has managed to complete the 3 Peaks Challenge 5 times!

During this time Malcom has used a lot of different products gaining knowledge on what works best.

Having experienced bad health problems, but not wanting to be slowed down, Malcolm found that the equipment we have, has aided him to carry on with activities as he did before he was ill which he's found that communicating this to customers reassures them with the choice they have made.

    Favourite resort:

I have two favourite destinations, the Lake District and Fort William both have amazing are-as for my two favourite activities, trekking and mountain biking. One of my aims for this season is to get out and spend as much time as I can doing my favourite activities. I also plan to extend my knowledge in snowboarding as I recently had my very first lesson which was an awesome experience."
