Ice climber

A winter climbing adventure in Rjukan’s frozen valleys

Ice climbing in Rjukan, Norway, is a unique experience.

With hundreds of routes from WI2 to WI6, this small town offers reliable ice, dramatic settings, and challenges for every level of climber. Leaving London behind, Alex Serban, manager of our Covent Garden store, set out with climbing partner James to discover why Rjukan is one of Europe’s best ice climbing destinations.

Planning your own trip

When to go: The best ice forms from December to March, with February usually offering the most stable conditions. Expect cold nights of -8°C to -12°C and variable daytime temperatures.

Getting there: Oslo Gardermoen is the most convenient airport. From there, Rjukan is a 5–7 hour drive. Car hire is strongly recommended, as public transport is slow and infrequent.

Accommodation and food: Options are limited and often expensive. Airbnb can offer better value than hotels. Supermarkets are well stocked, but alcohol is heavily taxed and only sold in restricted outlets. Eating out is possible but costly, so many climbers self-cater.

Final thoughs

Rjukan is one of Europe’s most reliable and rewarding ice climbing destinations. With accessible roadside crags, adventurous gorge climbs and big multi-pitch routes, it offers challenges for every ability.
