DOWN

Ounce for ounce, nothing insulates as effectively as down. Down-filled bags are very light, warm, and compressible. When cared for correctly, they will last for many years. The negative? Down is susceptible to moisture; when wet, its insulating capabilities will significantly drop. That is why some sleeping bags feature down with a hydrophobic treatment - it helps the down perform better and dry faster if it does get damp. Down is measured in fill power; it represents how much loft the down has. The higher the fill power, the better the warmth-to-weight ratio will be.

Pertex Equilibrium

The unique structure of Pertex® Equilibrium created a comfortable microclimate by balancing weather protection and breathability. Pertex® Equilibrium uses a double weave construction in which a tightly woven outer face provides protection from the elements whilst a more openly woven inner face helps to move moisture away from your body.

Pertex® Shield fabrics provide lightweight waterproof protection whilst remaining highly breathable. The versatile 2, 2.5 and 3-layer constructions combine lightweight face fabrics with waterproof, windproof and breathable membranes. A durable water repellent (DWR) finish applied to the face fabric sheds rain and snow, which helps to maintain breathability.

Pertex® Quantum  (formerly Pertex Classic, Mircolight, Quantum and Quantum GL)

Pertex® Quantum uses a tightly woven structure to provide a light and soft fabric that allows insulation to fully loft. Precisely constructed from incredibly fine yarns, Pertex® Quantum fabrics are designed to trap still air and improve the efficiency of insulation. A durable water repellent (DWR) finish sheds light rain and snow to provide additional weather protection.

Pertex® Quantum Pro (formerly Pertex Endurance)

Pertex® Quantum Pro uses an ultra-thin water resistant coating to provide increased weather resistance for extreme conditions. PFC-Free

Per- and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are a family of human-made, fluorine-containing chemicals. They have long been used to add water and stain repellent properties to technical fabrics. PFCs can harm the wearer of the garment and damage nature. Incredibly resistant to breakdown, these pollutants have been found across the globe; they can remain in the environment for many years after release. In response, a growing number of PFC-Free products are being developed, designed to provide reliable water repellency without the use of these harmful chemicals.

Recycled

Patagonia first made a fleece from recycled plastic bottles in 1993, since then more and more brands have been ‘recycling rubbish’ to make the high-performance clothing and equipment that we all love to rely on in the outdoors. There are now many different types of materials and products made from waste that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill.

Responsible Down Standard

The Responsible Down Standard (RDS) aims to ensure that down and feathers come from animals that have not been subjected to any unnecessary harm. It is an independent, voluntary global standard, which means that companies can choose to certify their products to the RDS, even if there is no legislation requiring them to do so. The RDS was developed and revised over three years, with the input of animal welfare groups, industry experts, brands, and retailers. The standard recognises and rewards the best practices in animal welfare. Find out more
