Base layers are a key piece of your wardrobe. They should be comfortable and quick to dry. Wicking is important as it will draw excess moisture away from your body allowing you to feel more comfortable. Quick drying synthetic fabrics can help you regulate your temperature when things get cooler. Taking a long sleeve option can provide additional protection from the sun on hot days. A fleece mid layer to wear over a base layer and underneath a jacket is key for keeping you warm once you reach the colder zones and in the evenings in the Toubkal Refuge. Your mid layer should be comfortable, easy to move in when worn over your base layer and fit underneath your other layers.

You will need at least one pair of light hiking trousers, hiking shorts or convertible trousers. While some prefer to wear shorts on the approach, full length trousers for the summit are recommended. Others may choose to wear full-length trousers for the entire trip to protect against sunburn, insects or scratches. We recommend walking trousers made of quick drying synthetic materials to allow wicking.

An insulated jacket is a must for cooler evenings at the Refuge, and for cooler conditions on the tops. Down insulated jackets have the advantage of being light and compressible and can be easily stowed in your pack for the long approach. If wetter weather is forecast, however, a synthetic insulated jacket could be a better option.

While the Altas Mountains are usually arid in the summer months, precipitation can fall in the form of rain or snow at higher altitudes. Choose a light and packable jacket for ease of carrying when not in use. Features like underarm zips, also help vent excess heat without compromising wet-weather performance. A pair of lightweight gloves provide warmth and wind protection when setting out from the Refuge, without taking up too much space in your pack in the long walk in.

A cap can keep the sun off during the day, and a warm hat is a must when the temperatures drop.

A pair of socks for each day of the trek will make a big difference to your comfort during the trip.

Your choice of boots will greatly depend on what fits you. The highest spec boots in the world are of little use if they don’t fit your feet, and an ill-fitting pair of boots can lead to blisters and a less enjoyable trip. Be sure to test out your boots on a few long walks before the trip. Your feet may swell at altitude, or after a day of walking in the heat, so a little room for movement is recommended. Midweight hiking boots with good ankle support will keep you stable when carrying a heavy pack on the rocky terrain.

Sunglasses are a must to protect from the effects of UV at high altitudes.

Temperatures in the Atlas Mountains can plummet during the night, and the Toubkal Refuge is not heated. Even in summer, temperatures at the Toubkal Refuge can fall below zero. A warm sleeping bag with a comfort limit of at least -2°C is recommended. In winter, a 4-season bag is required. Down bags have the added advantage of a better warmth to weight ratio than similar synthetic bags, reducing the amount you have to carry, but can be more expensive. Many hikers opt to use porters for the trip from Imlil to the Toubkal Refuge, so a light day pack is all that may be needed. If carrying your own gear, it may be worth considering a large pack. If not, a Duffel bag makes for a good option.

A head torch is essential for summit morning as you will leave the Refuge when it's still dark. Spare batteries are a must as battery life can be affected by cold temperatures.

You don't have to use hiking poles, but they can make trekking peaks easier. Poles can provide stability on rockier sections of the trail, and reduce the strain on your joints by spreading your weight over four points during the long descent.

Dry bags can be useful for keeping your gear dry, but also for separating items in your pack and keeping things organised.
