This October, skiers will be given the chance to experience all the Backcountry has to offer at the UK’s best indoor snow slope.

The team at Ellis Brigham will be joined by a host of friends at the Snowdome, Tamworth on Saturday 5th October to offer many free sessions including the chance to explore and test the latest backcountry gear, perfect your skinning technique, transceiver training as well as ski films, talks and lots more.  Entry is free but purchased slope passes are required for on-snow activities.

Ellis Brigham Ski Buyer, Steve Wells says: "The event has been carefully designed to cover everything you need to know about the backcountry. Its aimed at those who are new to backcountry as well as those have spent some time enjoying all the backcountry has to offer. One thing is guaranteed you will leave the event with new friends, new-found skills and renewed confidence for when you skin up and click in this winter."

Joining the Ellis Brigham team at the event will be Mountain Guides and Athletes; Martin Chester, Matt Helliker and Blair Aitken, expert coaches from New Generation Ski School, Glenmore Lodge and brands including Atomic, Black Crows, Black Diamond, Nordica and many more.

Equipment Demo

Skis, boots, bindings, skins, and more to try on snow from Atomic, Black Crows, Black DiamondBlizzard, Dalbello, Dynafit, Elan, G3, Marker, Nordica, Roxa, SalomonScarpa  Scott, Tecnica, Volkl. Advice from experts and explanations of the latest gear.

  • Demo AM 10am-1pm (mix of 1, 2 or 3 hour tickets)
  • Demo PM 2pm-5pm (mix of 1, 2 or 3 hour tickets)

Discover Backcountry Course (10 places)

Full day course for Backcountry novices, with Blair Aitkin (skiers should be confident on blue and red runs, no Backcountry experience is required).

During the session Blair will give you tips and techniques that will help you master skinning (including kick turns); learn the theory of terrain choice and avalanche awareness; practice transceiver searches; and he will coach you on your downhill ski performance.

  • 10am-5pm (on snow 11am-12pm, and 3pm-4.30pm, other elements off are off-snow)

Introduction to Skinning (6 places per session)

Learn the basics of putting on and taking off skins, plus how to care for them. Advice on the different types of bindings. On snow, you will get tips on skinning including kick turns and time to practice all the techniques. With Martin Chester or Andy Townsend.

  • 10am-11am (1 hour ticket)
  • 12pm-1pm (1 hour ticket)
  • 2pm-3pm (1 hour ticket)
  • 4pm-5pm (1 hour ticket)

Master Skinning (6 places per session)

This course is for skiers with some experience of using skins. The focus will be on more efficient technique, practising kick turns and dealing with tricky terrain.

  • 3pm-4pm (1 hour ticket)

Technique - Dealing With All Conditions (6 places per session)

To ski in the Backcountry, you need a range of skills to deal with huge variety of terrain and conditions. With a focus on techniques for variable snow, deeper conditions, crud and anything else this course will boost your skills when off-piste.

Technique – Getting The Most From Fat Skis (6 places per session)

Wider skis need adjustments in technique to maximise what they can offer the skier, this course will give hints and tips to get the very best out of them.

Race - up the Fall-Line and Back Down

Mass start, skin-up and ski-down race for prizes

Not carrying any extra pounds is essential to skiing in the Backcountry, this talk will cover modern gizmos and the latest weight saving kit to bring the overall burden of a ski touring pack down.

Practising Companion Rescue Workshop

‘Home truths’ session about the fact that we should practice, but very few people do. This workshop will introduce a variety of games that can be played for bets/beer in a hut to improve your transceiver skills. The format uses explanatory slides with some small-scale practical exercises. Most importantly, this session provides ‘take-home’ tips that can be practised on your own.
