Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports, Castlefield, Manchester
The Castlefield store specialises in winter sports clothing and equipment, and is the only shop in Manchester that stocks a full range of backcountry and ski touring gear, all year round. Located in Wellington Mill, the shop is a 5 minute walk from the city centre and only 500 yards from Deansgate station. If you're driving then the store has a free customer car park.
Mark started climbing over 8 years ago and loves bouldering, although he also enjoys sport and trad climbing from time to time. He tries to get out on a climb, either indoors or outdoors depending on the weather, at least 2 or 3 times per week.
Most of the climbing Mark has done has been in the UK, either in Wales or the Peak District, or the indoor climbing centres in Manchester such as Rockover and Manchester Climbing Wall.
Dali’s Hole in Llanberis. “This place is climbing Mecca. The scenery is absolutely stunning, and everywhere you look you can climb.”
Dave has been a skier almost all his life, beginning at the age of 3. He has skied all over the world, is a qualified BASI Level 2 instructor and has been our Ski Department Supervisor at Castlefield since 2011, having worked in the department since 2006. Dave skied for Manchester University 1st Race Team for 6 years, competing both at home and in the alps on regular basis with several top thirty results (Slalom, Giant Slalom and occasional Super-G in the alps) and was awarded university sports colours.
He is a regular on the Ellis Brigham ski test in Austria/Switzerland every year, reviewing the upcoming season's skis (very enjoyable work but uniquely informative at the same time!) and he can be found fitting boots for the company at both annual ski shows each year.
The Valleys, France
For my own skiing, my heart is off-piste, preferably 'steep and deep' when conditions allow! Otherwise you might just find me in the park!
In terms of favourite spots I tend to move around a lot but you can't go wrong with the old Three Valleys in France for the sheer variety of riding on offer. When it comes to the traditional atmosphere and the 'apres' though it's hard to beat Austria!
Danny earned his turns on Halifax’s dendex, before becoming a Castleford regular when we went to university. His first season in Alp D’Huez led to a further three years there, and before he knew it he was chasing winters around the world including seasons in Whistler, Canada, Queenstown, New Zealand and Mt. Buller, Australia.
A BASI qualified instructor and freestyle coach, Danny loves the park, but come a powder day the whole mountain is his playground.
Whistler, Canada. "Whistler has to be my favourite for its unrivalled terrain and parks. I met a bear there once – luckily it was dozy as it had just come out of hibernation. It fell over and rolled away so thankfully it was nothing to worry about!"

"I just wanted to put on record the excellent customer service me and my fiancé received from the staff in the Castlefield store. The Mrs and I left the store feeling 1) happy that we had received a good deal after buying a bundle of equipment and 2) confident that we had bought the right equipment for our style of riding and ability. This was all down to the staff who spent nearly 2 hours clearly explaining our options and the technology behind the equipment. We definitely appreciated their many years of experience, relaxed and open (honest) approach to customer service which gave us confidence / put our mind at ease that we weren't being "sold" something we didn't want/need. "
"I called in to look at some new ski boots, as my previous ones were uncomfortable, causing friction burns and blisters on my ankles/legs. My assistant, Ms Monet, was helpful, knowledgable and friendly. She went out of her way to assist in finding the right fitting boot for me and also suggested various helpful solutions to my blister problem (such as using a a silk sock liner under fine Merino wool ski-socks). The staff in general were helpful, happy and knowledgable, looking like they enjoyed their positions. I chose a pair of Lange boots, and have just returned from a fabulous, enjoyable ski holiday in the French Alps. Thanks to great fitting boots, my skiing improved, and the comfort certainly did!"
