How to Clean & Re-Proof Your Waterproof Clothing

How to Clean & Re-Proof Your Waterproof Clothing
8 December 2020 No comments

If you have got some time on your hands, take the opportunity to make sure your waterproof clothing is in peak condition.  To ensure your kit is wet-weather ready, we thought we'd explain how to wash and re-waterproof your waterproof jackets and trousers: whether they are made using GORE-TEX, DryVent, Pertex Shield, or e-Vent.

All waterproof clothing has a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatment. It makes water bead and roll off the fabric, but eventually wears off with use.

The performance of technical waterproof outerwear is based upon its ability to repel water and allow moisture from within to escape.  Once water begins to soak into the outer fabric of a jacket or waterproof trousers, it loses this quality. While the inner membrane will still ensure the garment is waterproof, it won't be able to let sweat escape, and so will feel damp inside.

Fear not though - you can easily clean and restore your clothing's waterproofing at home using aftercare products from Grangers and Nikwax. View our Clothing Care range here.

Top tips:

  • Do not use standard detergent or fabric conditioner as this will harm the garment's performance
  • If the internal taped seams on your garment have become detached, hand-wash and once dry reattach with appropriate seam sealant. Once the seams have been repaired, wash and reproof as per instruction

Cleaning & Reproofing with Grangers

Grangers 2 in 1

Products needed: Grangers Wash + Repel Clothing 2 in 1, or Grangers Performance Wash Concentrate and Grangers Clothing Repel (wash-in) or Grangers Performance Repel Plus (spray-on)

The product(s) you use will mainly depend on how much time you have:

  • If you are short on time, choose Wash + Repel Clothing 2 in 1
  • For a more thorough clean and reproof, choose Performance Wash Concentrate and then follow with Clothing Repel (wash-in) or Performance Repel Plus (spray-on)
  • If your jacket has a fabric inner, you may prefer the spray-on proofer so not to coat the lining

How To Clean With Grangers

1. Ensure there are no detergent or fabric conditioner residues in your washing machine by cleaning out the trays and letting it run empty on a rinse setting

2. Gently rinse off any thick dirt from your garment by hand, then do up all zips and Velcro before putting it in the machine

3. Use the amount specified on the label, shake bottle, and pour into the washing machine drawer

4. Wash on a full cycle at 30°C/86°F or according to care label instructions

NB If using Wash + Repel Clothing 2 in 1, heat activation is required.  Tumble dry on low-medium heat, or apply heat using an iron or hairdryer.
