A dirty water bladder is no one’s friend.

Leave it damp and you’re basically inviting mould to move in. Whether you’re mid-adventure or packing it away for the season, here’s how to keep your hydration system clean, dry, and ready to go.

How to keep your water bladder dry

A hydration reservoir hangs from a wooden hanger on a metal rod, with tubes and clips attached, against a white wall.

To dry your bladder, turn it upside down with the cap open and hang it to air out. You can buy specific reservoir hangers or improvise with a whisk, clothes airer, or coat hanger.

You can also store your bladder in the freezer. Drain it as much as possible, then store it (with the tube) in the freezer between uses. This prevents any sugar residue or moisture from encouraging mould growth.

Sterilising your water bladder

To sterilise the bladder, you can use baby bottle sterilisation tablets or specific reservoir tablets.

Finally, as always, it's important to fully dry the bladder out.
