Last season YES launched their unique twin tip power board the 20/20 to what can only be described as universal acclaim. Its award-winning shape featured the state of the art 3D Powder Hull profile that gave the 20/20 and level of float in the deep stuff that can only be described as mind blowing. However, from the second it was released the question on everybody's lips was will they put the Powder Hull on the 420 .
Well for 2017 the answer is yes. Taking a slightly modified version of the fully directional wide platform shape of the standard for 420, YES have integrated an all new directional Powder Hull profile into the new board and in an instant have created one of the most beautiful and best-performing powder boards to have ever come to the market.
If you're unaware of the Powder Hull principle it's pretty simple really. Taking inspiration for the hydrodynamic work of the planing hull designer David Thomson and legendary surfboard shaper Bob Simmons, the Powder Hull profile is designed to control the flow of snow under the board to deliver unequalled levels of lift.
So how does this work in real time? Well, the nose of the 420 Powder Hull features an extended three-dimensional concave profile. This tapers down to the flat section of the base channelling the snow down and under the front of the board, giving truly stunning levels of lift at the front end. Now at the back of the board a shorter 3-D concave does the opposite, blowing the snow out and sinking the tail. This unique profile combined with the classic 420 powder shape creates what can only be described as a truly incredible ride in the deep.
However as with the standard 420, the Powder Hull version still retains that deep sidecut - 6.7 m in this case - so you still get that lightning fast turning performance that's such an important part of the standard board.
Internally the 420 Powder Hull utilises the lightweight Weightless Core, this combination of standard and low-density poplar with superlight paulownia delivers a lively ride, low weight under the feet all without sacrificing strength and durability. Now add to this structural layers formed from torsionally responsive Tri-Ax glass, and not only is this board light, it's super responsive and super stable as well. Finally the high grade sintered base gives a fast glide in all snow conditions.
