I needed all round footwear for 3-season mountain walking and scrambling (pretty much everything that doesn’t require crampons). I have very wide (slightly arthritic) feet so a lot of outdoor footwear is too narrow. I tried a few boots and shoes and the initial fit of the Zens stood out with lots of support and comfort. I added Superfeet footbeds and used just thin Smartwool socks. Took the Zens straight out up Snowdon via Y Lliwedd ridge in cloudy/ drizzly conditions… the fit and support continued to impress (it was easy to forget I wasn’t wearing heavier boots) and grip was really impressive. They felt nimble on scrambly bits and shock absorption was good going downhill. They’ll maybe have their limitations as they don’t use GORE-TEX in their construction so I’ll be avoiding wet boggy ground! For some choosing a shoe over a more trad boot may be too much of a leap of faith but I can’t praise the Zen’s stability and support enough and the ankle flexibility feels liberating. I think the Zen’s classification as an approach shoe is too narrow and a lot of all-round mountain walkers would love these great shoes. Overall I think the Zens are a great buy and they’ll be my go-to footwear for many years.
