Top 5 Running Apps For Beginners

There are plenty of running apps for beginners that offer a great way to introduce you to the sport and start to build up some fitness. Whilst running is largely a simple sport, having the addition of a good running app can really help with early fitness building and motivation. With the help of our top picks for some of the most useful beginner running apps below, you'll be out getting the miles in before you know it!

Couch to 5k

Couch To 5k App

The NHS approved Couch To 5K app is a fantastic starting place for those new to the sport. Over the course of 9 weeks, this beginner programme takes you from no running experience at all to being able to complete 5km. The programme entails three 30 minute exercise blocks a week, which are comprised of running, walking and resting. As the programme builds, you run for longer with less resting.

Pacer

Pacer App

Pacer may be centred around step-counting, but it’s a great app for helping you start a regular running routine. It runs in the background to log your steps throughout the day. You can also track your runs with GPS alongside being able to join group challenges. It is a great way to connect with others in the Pacer running community and to get the motivation to keep running a little longer!

Strava

Strava App

Undoubtedly one of the most popular running apps, Strava is great for runners of all abilities. It allows you to track your runs, follow your friends and favourite athlete’s runs, as well as taking part in challenges that can be based on time, distance, elevation goals and more.

Strava is a great way to stay connected with other runners and start to build your own training log.

Zombies, Run

Zombie Run App

Zombies Run is a smartphone fitness game and a really fun way of getting the motivation to keep running. Not only does the app have a similar 8-week programme to Couch To 5k, but a storyline runs throughout which is based on running from zombies and collecting supplies. It’s a great way to liven up running and provide the distraction/motivation to keep running when first starting out.

Each time you head out on your run, you listen to the mission/story along with music, and throughout you’ll periodically be chased by Zombies to speed you up. It’s a great way to motivate yourself and get hooked on running.

Komoot

Komoot App

Komoot is a great way for both new and experienced runners to find new routes to run. You can plot out routes based on your fitness level and link up user-created 'highlights' and 'segments' to discover new running gems. Komoot will automatically create a route that avoids busy roads and help you discover new areas. The app also has turn-by-turn navigation that's available offline, so you can stay on track and focus on your run.
