The Welsh Ride Thing 2013
This weekend two of our Chester store's intrepid staff tackled The Welsh Ride Thing, a unique mountain biking 'bikepacking' event in the heart of the Welsh hills.
"The Welsh Ride Thing is bikepacking challenge, starting in Machllynth - a stunning and a very quiet location in mid-Wales. The idea behind the event is to get to as many checkpoints as possible but with no set route involved. It's very reliant upon navigation skills (we had to use three Ordnance Survey Maps to plot our route).
"Everyone takes a different route, so it makes for a very social occasion when you meet other riders! We rode 90km in two days carrying all our kit, food, bivvy equipment, spare clothes and bike tools, with each pack weighing in around 7kg.
"There are no marshalls at the checkpoints, so it's all about personal pride and finding those pubs/cafes to stop in and chat to other participants.
"We had a set place that we wanted to bivvy but a kind landlord offered us his beer-garden to sleep win. WIN! We also had our breakfast in a great local cafe.
"All in all, its a fantastic event with very little rules - ideal for a first-timer or someone looking for a relaxed and social mountain bike challenge. The weather was awesome, with clear blue sky for both days!"
