Often one of the best ways to start climbing and improve your technique is at an indoor climbing gym. Climbing gyms have been sprouting up all across the UK over the last few years, gaining popularity with beginners and first-timers due to ease of access. Gyms such as Manchester Climbing Centre and The Climbing Academy in Bristol and Glasgow are ideal for when the weather's wet or just a bit of training.
Outdoor climbing is where it all started and there really is nothing like scaling a sheer piece of rock, fighting the ever imposing vertigo and the achievement of topping out. Outdoor training centres such as Glenmore Lodge in Aviemore are in a prime location to access some of the best 'real rock' climbing in the UK.
Manchester Climbing Centre – Taster (1 hour) – £30 (first person) -£15 (subsequent) Never been climbing, but fancy a go? Then this one is for you. During this one-hour climbing session, instructors will get you climbing and having as much fun as possible. After all that’s what climbing is all about, fun!
The Climbing Academy Bristol/Glasgow – Family sessions (75 mins) – £60 (Up to 6 people, min. 2 adults) Bouldering is ideal for families and there is no better place to try it out than at The Climbing Academy in Bristol or Glasgow. Experience the freedom of climbing without ropes (up to 4.5m) in the safety of a fully crash matted centre.
Manchester Climbing Centre – Beginners course (3 x 2 hour sessions) – £90 So you’ve caught the bug. Next stop is a beginner's climbing course to make sure you’ve got the basics covered. This climbing course will teach you all the skills required to climb unsupervised safely, including: knots and rope-work, belaying, correct use of equipment and climbing technique.
Glenmore Lodge – Under 18 Intro to climbing (5 days) - £475 (£600 with accommodation) Take your first steps climbing outside on the real rock. This 5 day course aims to develop a solid foundation in core rock climbing techniques, whilst climbing a variety of single pitch rock climbs and ultimately make you a competent and self-reliant climber.
Manchester Climbing Centre – Learn to lead - £78 (per person) Once you are top-roping comfortably and competent at the basic safety requirements of climbing, you should consider learning to lead climb. Whilst it may seem daunting at first, lead climbing and clipping your own rope in the quickdraws as you go is an exhilarating experience. This course teaches you all the skills you need to be a safe lead climber as well as developing your climbing technique.
The Climbing Academy Bristol/Glasgow – Movement & technique - £50 (3 x 60 mins or 1 x 4hr intense) These sessions are a great way of improving your climbing technique in a very short space of time. The Climbing Academy's experienced coaches will help you perfect key climbing techniques and how to position your body enabling you to climb with the minimum of effort.
Glenmore Lodge – Intro to sport Climbing (2 days) - £325 (£375 with accommodation) This 2 day introduction to sport climbing takes you through all the essentials necessary to develop your sport climbing technique. Individualised coaching will help you improve your positioning and movement on the rock, while advanced instruction in belaying will ensure you become comfortable around a variety of single pitch routes in no time.
Manchester Climbing Centre – 1:1 Climbing Coaching - £42 – 1:2 Climbing Coaching - £54 The Climbing Academy Bristol/Glasgow – 1:1 Climbing Coaching - £55 1:1 climbing coaching can be a great way to make significant improvements in your climbing in a short period of time. These highly personalised sessions will allow climbing coaches to assess your individual technique and identify key areas within your climbing that could be improved. Coaches will then work with you to create challenging yet realistic goals and provide you with the knowledge and training needed to achieve them.
Glenmore Lodge – Mountain instructor award training (9 days) - £1000 (with accommodation) If you find yourself hopelessly addicted to all aspects of climbing and mountaineering or maybe are looking to pursue a career within the sport, then this is the one for you.
The Mountaineering Instructor Award Training course provides all the training necessary for instructors working in summer conditions. The syllabus includes multi-pitch rock climbing, scrambling and other mountaineering skills. Also included are training, assessing and coaching processes. Once you’ve completed this training course and taken the Mountaineering Instructor Award assessment (£695) you can be proud to call yourself a fully qualified summer mountaineering instructor.
