Socktober with Smartwool

Socktober with Smartwool

This Socktober we've teamed up with hiking, ski and running socks experts Smartwool for a charitable project which aims to raise money to help support Friends Of The Lake District and their Fell Care Days. For every pair of Smartwool socks sold we will donate £1 to help Friends of The Lake District.

The Project

Established in 2011, Fell Care is Friends of the Lake District’s flagship project. It has developed a strong reputation for the difference it makes and was highly commended in the National Parks “Volunteer Awards” and shortlisted in Campaign for National Park’s “Park Protector Awards” last year.

Fell Care Days are mass-participation volunteering events which empower communities to actively take part in the conservation of their landscapes through litter picks, tree planting, rhododendron bashing and much more. They also teach rural heritage skills, such as dry stone walling and hedge-laying to new generations and help keep them alive. Tourism rapidly outstrips agriculture as the region’s main employer and, as our sparse population ages, these vital skills are at risk of being lost. They are also a powerful engagement tool to encourage children, and adults, to become inspired by the nature around us and all of its special qualities.

On each single-day event hundreds of local people and visitors, of all ages and from various walks of life, participate and interact with the Lake District’s unique landscapes. These days also empower communities to make a lasting difference to their local environment. Volunteers are educated about the issues facing their landscapes and are taught how to manage them to create and maintain a landscape that is healthy and sustainable for the local community, and its millions of annual visitors to enjoy.
