Skiing but not as you know it

Skiing but not as you know it

If you’re willing to give it a try and leave any preconceptions at the door then we guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised by a relatively new indoor ski slope that's opened in Reading recently.

Skiplex established themselves in Chiswick 3 years ago, and this recent opening in Reading is the second phase of a plan that will see them expand country wide.

The Skiplex slope fits into a squash court and the width can accommodate up to 4 skiers standing side by side. The gradient of slope can be adjusted to suit the level of skier. The floor moves underneath you (which takes some getting used to) via rollers.

This new facility in Reading opened in December 2012 and provides the latest developments in ski technology - indoor, endless ski slopes, helping to add that little bit extra to your ski holiday by preparing your muscles and improving your technique

When we heard about it we just had to have ago! James, The Manager at Reading, gave Mark Brigham a quick overview. The machines run in a similar way to a treadmill and the skis you use are a lot shorter then you would use on piste. To start you off you hold onto a metal bar, with skis straight, whilst the matting rolls (slowly) underneath, there is a giant mirror to provide immediate and real time feedback on your technique. Every movement no matter how little has an effect and after only a few minutes your legs will feel it!

You gradually then let go of the bar and start to snowplough from here James was suggesting snowplough turns and you gradually build up to parallel when you feel confident. The sensation makes it all a lot harder than you’d think but great fun and your thighs will feel the burn! You finish a session yearning to give it another go - great fun for skiers new and old!

About Skiplex

The Skiplex instructors are fully qualified and hugely enthusiastic about teaching from beginners to seasonaires, kids to the more senior skiers amongst us, and those looking for a gentle session to those looking to crank in some turns. With only three allowed on the slope at one time in Skiplex Reading and two in Skiplex Chiswick they offer tailor made and personal tuition.

Skiplex provide all equipment, all that they ask is that you turn up with a thick pair of socks and a good to go attitude! An hour lesson at Skiplex can have you totally exhausted but exhilarated and buzzing for another session.

The Skiplex Ski Academy is a perfect introduction to skiing for kids, whether they are beginners or already storming the slopes. The club is suitable for ages 5 to 14 and is based on three ability levels - Penguins, Reindeers and Polar Bears. Courses generally last 6 weeks, focusing on the development of skiing technique through suitable games and tasks. For us adults, Skiplex enables us to get that cheeky bit of practice in before we head to the mountains – no more complaining about painful and exhausted muscles after day one and time to surprise friends and family with your impressive technique from the start!

Skiplex is also a fantastic alternative to monotonous gym work outs and enables you to keep fit during the summer whilst doing something a bit different and great fun. They will be running several day long ski courses and kids camps during the summer.

Prices start from £10 and for booking contact Reading on 0118 9977790
