Our Top 5 Backcountry Snowboards of 201617
Last year we put the latest and greatest backcountry boards through their paces at our annual board test in Hintertux, Austria. We've pulled out five of our favourites which we think excelled in the powder conditions.
Burton Tough Cat
- 158 - Weight Range: 50 - 77kg
- 162 - Weight Range: 54 - 80+kg
The Burton Tough Cat excels in all conditions and terrain types, whether pushing the boundaries out in the backcountry or laying down fast carves on the groomers.
Featuring a directional camber profile, directional flex pattern and a WFO sintered base results in an effortless ride both in deep powder and on piste. The FSE certified Super Fly wood core combined with Burton’s signature advanced Squeezebox profile results in an exceptional amount of pop, whilst tri-ax glass layers and a carbon I Beam increase its torsional strength and responsiveness. This board is simply a joy to ride.

The Flagship has always been one of the major benchmarks for all backcountry snowboard designs. Its fully directional profile combined with a Blunt rockered nose makes this board effortless to ride in deep snow, this is where the Flagship excels.
That being said, the Flagship is equally at home cruising the groomers. Its Master core construction features a combination of triple density wood and beech stringers that run parallel down the board’s edges. This combined with a powerful camber and a 9900 sintered base make this board super-fast with exemplarily edge hold for icy pistes.
Jones Women's Hovercraft (Men's also available)
- 148 - Weight Range: 51 - 73kg
- 152 - Weight Range: 51 – 73kg
The deeper the snow, the better this board performs. With a minimal amount of effort this board floats and carves in powder like a dream.
Utilising high-end materials enables the Hoverboard to perform just as well on piste as it does in the backcountry.
- 157 - Weight Range: 66 - 84kg
- 161 - Weight Range: 73 - 95+kg
Slash have been producing one winning board after another and the Nahual is no different. Its innovative directional twin shape combined with the new Preload flat base profile result in loads of float in deep snow, but also an incredible amount of stability and balance underfoot.
The Nahual is perfect for those backcountry expeditions.
Never Summer Cobra
