North Wales Climbing Training
Our annual climbing training is a highlight of the year, and this was surely one of the best ever.
Sixteen staff from across the country travelled to Nant Peris in Snowdonia for the two-day event. First on the agenda was a tour of the DMM factory at Llanberis. It’s a fascinating experience. From the floor-shuddering 800 ton forges to the blast of scorching air from the heat treatment vats, you get a sense of the brute forces needed to create the intricate, lightweight designs for which DMM are famous. There’s also an impressive attention to detail and skill throughout the process (you should see Medwen assembling karabiner gates).
Next stop – the Llanberis Pass, a trad climbing and bouldering mecca. On one side of the valley a group looked at placing protection, had a practical lesson on fitting harnesses and got in some good climbing. Another group spent time learning about Five Ten rock shoes, getting some top tips on rock shoe fitting and trying several different models for size on the Cromlech boulders. Meanwhile, Ben Bransby gave another group a bouldering masterclass dispensing some top tips on movement and technique.
On the following day, the group headed out to the Parisella’s Cave area of the Orme after talks from The North Face and Grangers. Ben Bransby trained staff on climbing hardware before a few hours more of climbing, bouldering and abseiling rounded off a superb trip. Our thanks go to the teams from DMM, Five Ten, The North Face and Grangers as well as the Welsh sun for shining!
