K2 to be Renamed K9 After Dog Makes Successful Winter Ascent

K2 is to be renamed K9 after Miniature Dachshund Delilah made the first successful winter ascent of the notoriously dangerous Himalayan mountain.

The 28,251ft peak has the lowest successful summit rate of the Eight Thousanders and before now has only been completed in summer.

Delilah's human, Aaron Tompkins said: "We were coming up to the Seracs beneath the summit and I realised I hadn't packed the Kendal Mint Cake and my hands were a bit cold, so I was forced to return to camp."

But Delilah was unperturbed, and after chewing through her lead, soloed the final 1000 metres and returned to base camp the following day with a GoPro selfie apparently showing her at the summit (pictured above).

Delighted local officials are reportedly honouring Delilah by renaming the infamous peak after her Genus.

"It's a fantastic gesture and I'm sure it will inspire more dogs to attempt the world's highest mountains", said Tompkins. "I just hope they don't think it has anything to do with that weird robot dog from Dr. Who".

Unfortunately Delilah was unable to comment due to an important belly rub appointment.
