5 Reasons We Chose Ischgl As Our Ski Test Location

Deep within the Austrian Tirol, close to the Swiss border sits the picturesque town of Ischgl. At 1370m it provides quick access to the Ischgl/Samnaun – Silvretta Arena ski area and Samnaun glacier, and last April we took our ski experts out there to spend five days testing this season's latest ski equipment.

Here’s why we choose Ischgl as the location for our ski test...

Ski Terrain

From the centre of the village it's a quick ride on the Silverettabahn gondola and you're up on the slopes. From here you have access to over 238km of piste serviced by a network of 45 fast-speed lifts. The runs are a healthy mixture of intermediate (21%), advanced (64%) and expert (15%) with easy backcountry access and two terrain parks for freestyle. This provided us with all the space and features we needed to test the skis thoroughly.

Accommodation

Hotel Schlosshof

Whatever your budget there is a range of accommodation from self-serviced apartments through to 5-Star hotels. We were lucky enough to stay in Hotel Schlosshof last year. Delicious food and comfortable beds made sure staff were able to rest and recuperate after a full on the slopes, ready for the next day of testing.

Scenery

The resort stretches out across several passes and provides excellent views down the main valley and back to the village. These beautiful panoramas made for the ideal backdrop to our ski review filming - encapsulating why the area is so revered.

Logistics

An airport

After a flight no one wants a long transfer to resort, us included. There are plenty of airports close to Ischgl that offer a range of flights throughout the week and weekend. Innsbruck is the closest at only 99km - meaning you can be in resort just 75 mins after you land.

Some of the nearby airports include:

  • Memmingen Airport - 195km / 2 hours 20 minutes
  • Zurich Airport - 220km / 2 hours 35 minutes
  • Bolzano Airport - 222km / 2 hours 25 minutes
  • Salzburg Airport - 278km / 2 hours 50 minutes

Off-Hill Activities

The town has an array of activities to do off the slope including some great après bars and restaurants. These locations helped set the scene for some of our lifestyle photography. If partying is not your thing then there are plenty of other options such as relaxing in one of the many spas, pools and saunas.
