Head’s Kore range is super successful, proving that lightweight doesn’t need to be light on performance. This new 87 version is the narrowest they have made yet and it slots in as fun, energetic all mountain model or as a great all-round BC ski when matched up with tour capable bindings. All the tech of the Kore range is present including the impressive blend of Koroyd, Graphene and Carbon and it’s this mix that manages to make it impressively light without affecting performance.

Terrain Type & Ability Level

Terrain Type
The Kore 87 wants to ski everywhere, it’s perfect for all conditions and handles piste surprisingly well with fun, energetic turns. It is away from groomed snow that it shines, thanks to a very balanced feel. Little errors aren’t punished when the snow or terrain is difficult, encouraging you to ski positively and make the most of it. Tight trees, packed moguls and skied out powder are all its natural home. 87mm underfoot is a good compromise to match the unfussy handling and ensure it works well on pistes. If you want more soft snow float, then look at its bigger brother, the Kore 93.

Skier Type
Good intermediate to advanced or even lighter weight experts. All with an eye on skiing every bit of terrain on the mountain. To get the best from the ski, decent technique is required but it won’t punish bad habits. And it certainly won’t feel a handful if the skiing gets tricky. It’s definitely more playful than powerful, but it isn’t some lightweight wishy-washy thing, it will hold and edge and power out turns when pushed. It is going to appeal a wide variety of abilities and skiers.

Overview

Shape
87mm underfoot is a good compromise to match the unfussy handling and ensure it works well on pistes. The contact points at the tip and tail aren’t in the extremeties, which creates smooth turn initiation and completion, as opposed to instant bite and or hold at the end of a turn. This is perfect for skiing away from groomed snow as it makes the ski more predictable and stable. If you want more soft snow float, then look at its bigger brother, the Kore 93.

Rocker
Tip and Tail Rocker is the best combination for skis that are set up primarily for soft snow. The tip rocker helps with turn initiation and floats in softer or mixed conditions. The camber ensures there is good grip and energy, and the tail rocker aids turn release. The result is the best handling for skiing away from groomed snow.

Core
The Karuba Light Weight core really is a clever piece of engineering. The Karuba wood has the perfect ratio of density and weight, giving the ski its pop and personality. Integrated with this are Koroyd and Graphene (explained in detail below). The combination of these 3 materials ensure the ski is light and balanced.

Construction
Okay, take a breath, the Graphene Koroyd Carbon Superlite Sandwich Cap Construction takes some beating as a name. It basically means the ski is light, durable and balanced, as well as lively. This Graphene Koroyd Carbon triumvirate keep the weight right down without damaging performance. The sidewalls ensure precise energy transfer and the cap adds durability. Finally, the Topless Tech of polyester fleece is used instead of a heavy traditional plastic topsheet.

Key Features

Koroyd
Koroyd is a honeycomb shaped material at the heart of the Kore. It’s super light and incredibly elastic, as well as very strong. It is crucial in making the ski feel so light but still so lively.

Graphene - Kore
Graphene is the thinnest and lightest element ever discovered by mankind. It is also the strongest material on the planet, stronger than diamond and 300 times stronger than steel, all in the thickness of one atom. By using it in the tip and tail, Head can reduce weight and increase the responsiveness in deep snow.

EB tester’s comments: Luke (Buying Team) Always a fan of the Kore skis and the 87 is a great addition to the line-up. Nimble enough for use on piste but the tip profile makes it easy to ski in softer snow. Floats well and is light under foot, a dream to ski on.
