We’ve featured Des from our  Covent Garden store before and he’s out and about again, this weekend heading North to Northumberland and the Kielder Marathon  Kielder Marathon

Des is competing in the 'most beautiful marathon in the United Kingdom' this weekend. The Kielder marathon takes in the beautiful countryside around Kielder Water in Northumberland - if you haven't been then its worth a trip (you don't have to run the marathon to enjoy it!) .

This will be the 3rd marathon to be held in Kielder. The first event in 2010 was won by Zak Kihara from Kenya in a time of 2:29:10 .Britain and 5 times UTMB winner Lizzy Hawker, who was 15th overall, she was the fastest female finishing in 2:58:00. .

The race that followed in 2011 will always be remembered for Rob Sloan, who famously cheated by taking the bus and not for the Cumbrian firefighter, Ricky Lightfoot who ran 2:34.14 in testing conditions. Sloan was later found out and stripped of his 3rd place medal and banned.

Kielder is a hilly race and the experienced runners tend to add 20 minutes to their normal flat marathon time. The average finishing time for this course is 4:25:00. .

The marathon will follow the Lakeside way .It's a trail that stretches right around the shore line of Kielder Water. It start's and ends in the same place and is almost exactly a 26 mile loop. Although most of the course is off road, a sturdy pair of trainers or a well worn pair of trail shoes would be suitable. It's not advisable to use new shoes or any trail shoes with a deep tread for this event as the course doesn't get too muddy. Des will be arming himself with a pair of Inov-8 X-Talons suitable for wet conditions and X-233 road shoes for if its dry. He'll also be wearing Salomon shorts with built in compression, compression socks and Salomon running vest with a fast wicking shirt underneath. .

Des competed in the Highland Fling (53 miles) in April; the South Downs Marathon in June and the UTMB( 100kms) in August and the Kielder will be his last marathon or ultra of 2012. His target is to get under the 4 hour barrier. After Kielder Des plans to do shorter x-country and road races for Kings College London, who he regularly trains and his club Kent Ac. .
