Grab a beer and some popcorn and settle in for a fantastic evening hosted by International Freeskier Rachel Findler that includes a big screen showing of This Is Home.
Falling is not An Option: The Adventures of a Freeskier
The evening kicks off with a Rachel Finder and her talk: Falling is not An Option.: The Adventures of a Freeskier.
Rachel shares gripping stories of being out in the mountains, being stalked by a mountain lion, skiing volcanoes in the Andes, Chile, sleeping in the snow in -20 degrees, dodging an avalanche by split seconds, having to keep her cool when being rescued after an injury when skiing miles from anywhere, and how falling is never an option.
Being undeterred from being told by friends and family she would never make it as a professional skier, Rachel explains how she placed 4th at her first Freeride competition knowing no one and nothing. A year later she finished 3rd at the Canadian Freeskiing Championships. As a result she was invited to the Redbull Wrangle the Chute where she landed sponsors; Faction Skis, Giro, Flylow Gear and Surefoot ski boots. During her ten years in Whistler, Canada Rachel quickly learnt there is more to Freeriding than meets the eye.
To survive and have success at Freeriding Rachel had to learn avalanche safety, snow packs, crevasse and mountain rescue, ski touring, snowmobiling, rock climbing in ski boots, abseiling, survival and the use of fire arms. Rachel's most powerful tool was having a strong mental resilience; how to control fear, stress and pressures of competing. She shares with us what happens behind the scenes and how extreme athletes cope with injuries, tragedies and the pressures of being on the world stage.
This is Home
Rachel's talk is followed by a big screen showing of Faction Skis latest film This Is Home. From Europe to the US and back again, we follow the Faction athletes as they return to their respective bases around the world to show us how they get it done on home turf.
Revisiting old playground and favourite lines, finding new challenges and scoping out secret spots, this film chronicles what it means to be a freeskier today – where the conditions are what you make of them, and the search for the perfect ride in your own backyard.
In production for the past year, This Is Home chronicles what makes a skier, and tells personal stories about the environment that creates and the conditions that helped shape athletes including Candide Thovex, the world's most famous and acclaimed freeskier, big mountain prodigy Johnny Collinson, 15-year old phenomenon Kelly Sildaru, and freeskiing icon Adam Delorme.
