The problem: climbing with a partner where there is a significant weight difference. The solution: Edelrid's Ohm. The Ohm is an assisted-breaking resistor that increases friction. It is attached via a quickdraw to the first bolt in the safety chain, with the rope running through it. In the event of a fall, it increases rope friction, making it easier for a lighter belayer to hold a heavier climber, and avoiding the belayer being thrown forcefully against the wall. Edelrid designed the Ohm so that it doesn't affect rope handling when belaying a lead climber - there is no additional rope drag, or friction when paying out rope.
