Alex Staniforth

The outdoors has been Alex's tool of choice for dealing with the ebbs and flows of life since the age of 14, including epilepsy, stammering, bullying and mental ill health. Now he is a record-breaking adventurer, ultrarunner, motivational speaker and author passionate about inspiring others to find opportunities in adversity.

At 27, Alex has already been on four expeditions to the Himalayas, surviving two disasters on Mount Everest as a teenager and reaching 7,125 metres on the world's sixth-highest peak, Cho Oyu.

In 2017 he started looking for challenges closer to home and became the fastest person ever to climb all 100 UK county tops in his 'Climb The UK' challenge, walking, cycling, running and kayaking over 5,000 miles in 72 days to raise money for mental health in young people. He then founded his own charity, Mind Over Mountains, which restores mental health through therapeutic outdoor experiences.

Now based in Kendal, Cumbria, he is usually found running in the local fells and spontaneous endurance challenges. In 2020 he ran the National 3 Peaks Challenge - climbing the three highest UK peaks and running 452 miles in-between just 9.5 days, and ran the 105-mile Lakes, Meres & Waters in April 2022. Whilst recovering from Long Covid he has discovered open-water swimming and is looking forward to water-based challenges in the future.
