OUR TOP 5 BACKCOUNTRY SKIS OF 2016/17

This year’s ski test in Hintertux, Tirol was one of the best yet, with fantastic conditions and most importantly lots of fresh snow. This meant we were really able to push our backcountry ski range to limit and we've picked out 5 of test favourites.

Whitedot Ranger Carbonlite

Whitedot Ranger Carbonlite
  • Weight: 3230g (pair 186cm)
  • Radius: 28m (186cm)
  • Sidecut: 133/105/117 (180cm)
  • Sizes: 172, 180, 188

This is a brilliant ski for taking on everything the backcountry has to throw at you. Whether you’re skinning uphill or tackling steep descents, the Ranger Carbonlite has the perfect blend of power, performance and stability that few other skis can match.

Weighing in at only 1615g per ski makes this the ideal choice for a day’s touring the backcountry and with a 108mm waist width and its long radius make this ski almost effortless to ride in deep powder. The poplar/ash core combined with camber underfoot and ensure quick edge-to-edge manoeuvrability and while still maintaining maximum grip when on piste.

The main feature which sets this ski apart from its competitors is the unique CarbonLite CL:3 design. This design combines materials including carbon, Kevlar and flax providing the ultimate combination of increased torsional strength with reduced weight, while also improving the skis lifespan.

Black Diamond Carbon Convert

Black Diamond Carbon Convert
  • Weight: 2900g (pair 180cm)
  • Radius: 23m (180cm)
  • Sidecut: 133/105/117 (180cm)
  • Sizes: 172, 180, 188

Shaving off 380g per pair when compared to the non-carbon version, this exceptionally lightweight ski is equally at home in the backcountry as it is on the groomers. The source of this weightlessness lies in its pre-preg carbon and paulownia wood core, which combined with the Formula One 3D Sandwich Light construction enables the ski to deliver maximum power to the edges whilst remaining torsionally stiff underfoot.

This technology, combined with a rocker profile results in exemplarily soft-snow performance and precision making this ski equally at home in an alpine environment as well out in the depths of the backcountry.

DPS Wailer 99 RP2 Tour1

DPS Wailer 99 RP2 Tour1

  • Sizes: 168, 176, 184

DPS is brand synonymous with backcountry exploration and the latest Wailer 99 RP2 Tour epitomises this. Designed for fast ascents with the ability to tackle any downhill you can throw at it, this ski features a cap construction combining a super-light balsa core with pre-impregnated carbon and glass fibre.

This ski carves and handles like a dream due to its camber profile and perfected radius and with a 99mm waist, it is ideal for handling a wide range of conditions and terrain types, holding its own across the mountain.

Salomon MTN Explore 95

Salomon MTN Explore 95
  • Weight: 2780g (pair)
  • Radius: 17.7m (177cm)
  • Sidecut: 130/95/116 (177)
  • Sizes: 169, 177, 184

This ski does exactly what it says on the tin. The MTN Explore allows for easy uphill ascents combined with precision performance and manoeuvrability for technical downhill descents.

Built using CFX Superfibres (a combination of carbon and flax) in a semi sandwich construction and utilising a honeycomb tip allow this ski to remain insanely light whilst offering on-par performance to any of its competitors. The MTN rocker and full wood core provide an agile yet solid feel when initiating tight carves, resulting in a highly adaptable ski capable of handling the most technical of line choices.

Dynafit Manaslu

Dynafit Manaslu

  • Radius: 18/21m (174cm)
  • Sidecut: 123/90/108.5 (174cm)
  • Sizes: 174, 182
