MOUNTAIN INNOVATIONS: PETZL SIROCCO HELMET

Three years ago, Petzl created the Sirocco helmet, a revolutionary design that was by far the lightest climbing helmet on the market. The feeling of not wearing a helmet yet remaining protected won it many admirers. Despite this success, pro and amateur climbers felt that there were areas for improvement in this concept helmet.

It seems Petzl have been listening and created a new and improved version. We take a look a closer look at the Sirocco (2.0) and all that it has to offer.

Polycarbonate / Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) crown

The top of the helmet is a mixture of impact resistant EPS foam and a polycarbonate (orange) cap. Lightweight and brilliant at absorbing energy, EPS foam protects you from falling debris while the polycarbonate cap adds further safety.

This new crown construction allows Petzl to reduce the volume of the helmet and improve the protection while only increasing the weight by 5g! It’s good to see that the designers have focused on safety rather than try to decrease the weight on what is already a featherweight helmet.

Ventilation and headlamp system

For warm summer climbs there is extensive ventilation along the back, side and front to keep you cool without sacrificing structural integrity. In colder weather the new low volume design and fit allow you to fit a jacket hood over the helmet or wear a beanie underneath.

Built for the toughest multi-day expeditions and low-light winter conditions, the helmet comes complete with a head torch clip system. Two aluminium clips secure the torch at the front while an elasticated bungee fastens it to the rear.

For anyone looking to do any ice climbing, this latest version of the Sirocco is also compatible with Petzl’s VIZION face shield.

Expanded Polypropylene (EPP) foam shell

EPP is a more durable and ding-proof material than EPS, making it the ideal choice for the main body of the helmet. It is still lightweight and great at dissipating force, but it is more spring-like and elastic than EPS, allowing it to withstand multiple impacts.

The new shell extends down around the back and side of the head providing extra coverage when swinging back towards a slab.

Easy adjust webbing harness and removable padding

The helmet comes with a simple yet effective one-hand-pull webbing harness at the back of the head and under the chin. Both straps can be adjusted while climbing and lock into place, delivering a solid and safe fit.

Foam padding inside a climbing helmet

Inside the helmet, you’ll find removable foam padding that cushions the forehead and top of your head. These are easy to remove and wash after a big session in warm conditions.

Overall Verdict

An unbelievably lightweight and breathable helmet that wraps around your head in a snug yet comfortable fit. Add in the new and improved low volume design, durability and protection and this helmet is a must for any climbers or alpinists who are looking to save as many grams as possible.
