THOUGHTS ON THE SKI RANGE

Dani in our Aviemore store wanted to get a better understanding of how many of our skis perform and feel so took time out to test 32 skis in our range at Braehead Snowfactor.

Dani is from Northern Spain and is a highly experienced ski mountaineer racer with over 20 years' experience. He is also an ex-semi-pro footballer, teacher and now ski reviewer.

His reviews below are taken from the notes he wrote following the test of each ski. He logged how each performed just after use, so his reviews are unpolished, brief, honest and we think you will find his thoughts helpful...

ON PISTE SKIS

HEAD MAGNUM:
From the first turn, they are incredibly demanding, crying out for more speed. It's tricky to hold short turns for a long time. They excel when in a fast carve and speed.
Absolute grip, predictable, control, precise, stability like a train on the rails. Excellent response edge to edge, easy turn initiation, powerful and sweet rebound. Total transmission from your body and legs to the skis.  100% on piste.

ROSSIGNOL PURSUIT 16 Ti:
Excellent turn initiation and rebound on carve. Complete grip and quick from edge to edge. Predictable, precise and total transmission from you to the snow.
Excellent in short turns, much better than the Head Magnum. You can hold short turns easier and for a longer time.
easy to steer them when travelling slow, excel at medium and fast speeds but powerful and lively.
Excellent response even on off piste. Amazing.

ROSSIGNOL PURSUIT 14 ARAMID:
They are exactly what is required for a progressing intermediate. Easy turn initiation and precise rebound. Total response in quick short turns and great from edge to edge and in long carve turns. Great stability and transmission. They’re perfect for progression into higher speed descent, but not too fast because they are still pretty flexible.
Absolute control, manoeuvrability and good response in all speed and turns.

ROSSIGNOL PURSUIT 13 X CARBON:
Impressive edge-to-edge grip and transmission in long carve turns.
In quick short turns, they skid a little at the tail, so you need to apply more pressure to avoid it.
easy steering in all turns. Total effective response in initial turns and good rebound.
It’s the ideal ski for beginners looking to improve quickly and reach a good intermediate level.

ROSSIGNOL UNIQUE 4 WM's:
The same as the Rossignol 14 Pursuit.
R. Unique 4 are lighter but hold excellent grip and transmission.
easy to drive them.
They are the perfect ski for intermediate skiers who aspire to be better.

ROSSIGNOL UNIQUE 2 Ltd WM’s:
An excellent ski for progressing beginners, easy to maneuver. Offers a pleasant response in quick short turns. It's a soft ski but has good grip whilst carving and stable at higher speed descents You feel comfy and confident in parallel turns and is guaranteed to improve your basic level.

ATOMIC CLOUD NINE WM’s:
good turn initiation in quick short turns. Excellent grip, transmission and energy in speed carving. predictable and responsive when going from edge to edge. The Atomic Cloud 9 skis without effort in any type of turns. They are guaranteed to improve the skiing of intermediate skiers. A lot of fun for upper intermediate skiers.

K2 SUPERBURNIN WM’s:
Absolute control and precision in overall turns. Energy, grip, transmission, quick edge to edge, rebound, stability, initial turns… Amazing.

ALL MOUNTAIN CARVE SKIS

BLIZZARD MAGNUM 7.7:
I needed to ski them twice to get a clearer view . maybe because I had high expectations of them.
First time: weird. Not comfy. I felt quite heavy, without fluency in the changes from edge to edge. Good grip and stability. (I thought …80% on piste/20% off piste..)
Second time: The same feelings in short turns, but now, much better control, grip and stability and quick change edge to edge in medium/long carve turns.
It’s 90% on piste for sure.

K2 SUPERFREE:
Super fun, short and medium turns. Really easy to drive and offers a great combination of energy and liveliness. Completely predictable.
Light but good transmission. Powerful. Amazing long carve turns. Amazing. 100% versatile.

SALOMON ENDURO LX800:
Feels good. You don't lose any control when skiing faster. good hold grip and transmission, quick from edge to edge. Comfortable and fun in short radius turns, easy  turn initiation.
Excellent ski for progressing intermediate skiers.

SALOMON ENDURO XT800:
Brilliant, splendid skis.
Great stability in speed ski carving. Precise steering, absolutely predictable in initial turns and excellent energetic rebound. easy response edge to edge.
Total control and precision in fast short turns with amazing rebound and easy next initial turn. You need good and powerful flexion holding short turns for a long time.
Solid. Amazing. Lively. Fun.

ATOMIC BLACKEYE Ti:
Heavier than the Salomon XT800.
Perfect for heavier skiers. They require more effort, more strength to be steered in initial short turns. They also require more speed becoming more fluency and improving their energy and transmission in long turns.
good carving grip, easy change edge to edge and good rebound. They are solid, precise and powerful  skis. 70% off piste skis.

HEAD SUPERSHAPE TITAN:
The best of ething. I only needed two attempts to know ething about them. Being honest, I could have been skiing on them all day in Xscape and never become bored J
Amazing in short turns and quick edge to edge in short, medium or long turns.
Amazing carving. Nice rebound. lively and lighter than th Atomic Blackeye.
Powerful skis but easy steering. Absolute transmission, stability, precision and predictable.
They’re excellent on piste skis but also they excel off piste.

ALL MOUNTAIN SKIS

ATOMIC CRIMSON Ti:
similar to the Atomic Blackeye. Only two differences: Slower in short turns and slower in change edge to edge because they are wider.
80% off piste skis.

ATOMIC AFFINITY PURE and AFFINITY STORM:
Amazing. They are lively in short turns. good transmission, hold grip and quick response and easy edge to edge in long turns.
Storm is wider and his response is a little slower in short turns and also when changing from edge to edge but easy to drive and control.
fun skis.

BLIZZARD BUSHWACKER:
Impressive. good transmission and completely responsive. Lively and easy driving (short, medium, long turns any speed). In carve turns much better grip and responsive edge to edge than Bonafide.
Ething was easy and fun. Excellent ski.

BLIZZARD BLACK PEARL:
The Bushwhacker’s female twin. The same amazing feeling as the Bushwacker.

SALOMON Q-90 and Q-88:
The best I've felt on an All Mountain ski has been on the S.Q-90/Q-88. Excellent in initial turns ( easy) and rebound (smoothly). Excellent transmission and steering in short and long turns. They both hold the speed in more aggressive carving and provide good grip, precision and stability from edge to edge. Great control in short, medium, long turns without loss of speed.
… All these features and they are still exceptionally light.
The most All Mountain versatile ski.

NORDICA BURNER and NORDICA WILD BELLE:
From the first moment I felt more stable on them than I had been on other all mountain skis. The sidewall along the skis could be why. Excellent transmission.
Easy quick short turns, but if you want to hold short turns for a long time you need more effort skiing. These are energetic skis.
Total stability, control and grip in long radius turns.
easy initial turn and nice rebound.
predictable.

NORDICA FUEL and NORDICA BELLE TO BELLE:
They are narrower and lighter than the Burner and also more manageable.
On piste, the Fuel is an improvement on the Burner.
Completely predictable.

MOVEMENT JAM:
After two tests, on different days, my conclusion was that the Jam is the least 'on piste' ski of all the All Mountain skis available due to its width and weight
After the second day and the second test y conclusions were slightly different. I experienced smooth turns and easier steering. Nice initial turn and rebound.  Good short radius turns, but they do begin to demand longer turns eventually. Good grip, responsive and lively in edge to edge. Very good stability.

FREERIDE SKIS

BLIZZARD BONAFIDE:
Great surprise.
Impressive fluency and lively short turns: Really easy steering and firm response, but you need to transfer and hold powerful flexion.
easy initial turns and solid and kind rebound… Amazing. In speed long turns they give you complete contact on the run, total transmission, not vibrations.
Good grip on all larger radius of turn, but if you try aggressive carving they don't offer a good grip response…excellent and fun skis.

WHITEDOT PREACHER:
Out of the blue. nice surprise.
Amazing. Similar to the Blizzard Bonafide. Comparing both, Whitedot is better in the carve and a little more rough in short radius turns but fantastic, fun and easy steering.

LINE SICK DAY 110:
Fun and easy for short turns. easy initial turn and good rebound. responsive.
Excellent transmission and manageable like Blizzard Bonafide.
Fun experience.

FREESTYLE SKIS

ROSSIGNOL STORM:
Easy maneuverability. easy 360 degrees turns, good stability in jumps and air turns. good grip in long radius turns and great rebound and great stability in speed descent… Only when you try more aggressive ski carving, they lose grip.
Light, fun and lively.

ATOMIC SUPREME:
They were too short for me, 149cm, but… light and easy steering.
Easy initial turn and good rebound. good grip in long radius turn and great stability at high speeds. lively from edge to edge. A fun ski.

ARMADA AR7:
They are quite heavy skis but good for medium-long speed radius turns.
Quite hard, responsive in short and initial turns and carve turns.

PARK SKIS

ATOMIC INFAMOUS:
Rough short radius turns, not clean rebound. They perform better in longer radius turns.
Good stability and good grip, but you need strong flexion to hold the grip with little speed.
