ORTOVOX OFF-PISTE AWARENESS TOUR 2017

Henry Schniewind and the Henry's Avalanche Talk team are back in the UK this Autumn to deliver the Ortovox Off-Piste Awareness Tour at venues across the UK including London,Tamworth, Chester, Manchester and Bristol. The events kick off on 25th October and run through to 20th January.

The Ortovox Off-Piste Awareness Tour 2017 is a series of live multimedia talks and outdoor training events about how to have fun and be safe while riding off piste this season.

In previous years the tour was comprised of "avalanche talks" because they were primarily about avoiding avalanche danger. Henry and the guys at HAT now prefer to call them "off-piste awareness talks".

HAT have evolved their training and events to be not just about avalanches, but about making the most of the off-piste. Off-piste is about discovering more of the mountain, it is about getting more from your skiing and for many helps them fall back in love with the sport.

With some simple training, you can make going off-piste no more dangerous than driving your car from the airport to the resort. And you will want to keep coming back.

The Talks

The programme has three different types of events:

1. Essentials Talk – a must-see talk, full of essential information for all off-piste skiers and snowboarders no matter how experienced you are.
2. In-Depth talk – Understand exactly how avalanches are triggered (for those who have already seen the Essentials Talk).
3. Transceiver Training - practical outdoor training on how to use the safety equipment to locate a buried avalanche victim in 5 minutes and rescue them in less than 15 minutes.

The talks last for around one and a half hours and help off-piste skiers and snowboarders understand how to prevent being caught up in an avalanche (and avoid other hazards), how to make the right decisions when off piste and how to deal with a crisis should the worst happen. Henry helps answer the fundamental questions and delivers a decision making and risk management formula that will help you understand that riding off-piste doesn't have to be any more dangerous than the activities you engage with in your normal everyday life.

The advanced talks assume you have attended the Essentials Talk and are for expanding upon your existing knowledge. Various theories are discussed including avalanche triggers and helping skiers and snowboarders understand exactly why and where avalanches happen.

Tickets for talks start from £10.00 (for 3 people).

The Beeper Training Sessions

beeper training

Beeper training sessions are an outdoor activity event where participants learn and practice the location of victims buried underneath the snow using the latest transceiver technology that's worn by anyone venturing off-piste in a European resort or backcountry in North America.

Each of these sessions is scheduled to run for 2.5 to 3 hours and is designed to ensure anyone attending can retrieve a buried transceiver within 5 minutes. The training introduces people to all aspects of off-piste safety equipment and preparation and in particular, how to use a transceiver.

The training includes the location of eight to ten buried victims in a circuit of pre-set avalanche accident sites, mimicking a real-life avalanche rescue situation.
