Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports, Castleford
Our Castleford store is located in Xscape - The UK's Ultimate Entertainment Destination and real snow ski slope, that sits conveniently next to Junction 32 on the outskirts of Leeds. The shop specialises in ski and snowboard gear and equipment, and it has a good range of products and brands all year round. Ellis Brigham also provide the expertise to run the indoor climbing wall and sky ride centre that are located in the centre, and as usual you can try out new season snowboards and skis for free.
Chris Cartwright - Store Manager
Chris has been snowboarding since 1994, and cut his teeth on the Sheffield Village dry slope. His first trip to real snow was with mates to Aviemore, and since then he has ridden many resorts in Europe and has completed seasons in Whistler and Mt Baker in the USA. Chris likes riding fast, hiking to find lines out of bounds, riding in the trees and Euro carves.
Mt Baker, USA. “Welcome to the wilderness. No lift queues, no mobile phone reception, relaxed vibe and friendly people. Check out the chilli in a bread bowl for dinner.”
Sarah has been walking in the hills since she was a small child, thanks to being taken on trekking holidays by her parents, and got the ‘hiking bug’ at an early age. She has now completed Bronze to Gold Duke of Edinburgh awards, and a BA Honours degree in Outdoor Leadership, the highlight of which was being taken to Norway to complete an ice climbing course.
Living in the North of England, Sarah spends a lot of time enjoying great walks and scenery in the Lake District, but hiking long distance is her passion, having recently completed the 196 mile Coast to Coast route along the Cumbrian Way, in 17 days.
Blen Cathra in the Lake District. “This is a steep, hard walk, but well worth putting the effort in, because the views over Keswick are incredible.”
Johnny is another of our pro riders, so as well as being sponsored by The Snowboard Asylum, he gets free kit from Lobster, Thirty Two and Union. He started boarding over 18 years ago, and at the age of 16 went to his first local competition. His snowboarding career built from there, and last year he managed to get to 10 different resorts and two end of season competitions
During his time as a snowboarder Johnny has completed 5 full seasons in resort, and he’s been on the last 5 TSA board tests. Needless to say he knows a lot about snowboarding so if you want some expert advice, drop in to the Castleford shop and talk to Johnny.
Big White in Canada. “This is a really fun place to ride. There’s lots of different types of terrain, and lots of trees. The people are really friendly too.”
Eddie has been skiing since the age of 5, and since then he has completed several full seasons in the US, Europe and New Zealand. Starting early worked out well for Eddie, because he ended up skiing in freestyle competitions for over 7 years, with sponsorship from top brands like Oakley and Salomon. He now works closely with K2 helping to manage their UK sponsored riders.
Eddie started his professional career by taking part in ski races, so there isn’t much about skiing that Eddie can’t tell you. He knows a lot about the latest skiing gear, and can help you make the right decision about what to buy depending on your age, experience, and skiing preference.
Engleberg, Switzerland. “This is a great resort because it goes to a high altitude so there’s lots of good snow, and a glacier as well so you can ski late in to the season. There are also lots of steep slopes so it’s really good for free riding.”
Trekking and Climbing Expert
Store: CASTLEFORD - LEEDS
Jake first got into trekking and climbing after his dad took him up Snowdon in 2006. Since then, he’s become totally addicted to peak bagging, and has taken his passion all over the UK and as far afield as Spain, China, and New Zealand.
Jake has expanded his hobby into winter climbing and mountaineering. He is currently in the process of completing all one hundred of Trail Magazine’s Best Mountains in the UK, and with plenty of experience under his belt, he hopes to gain his Mountain Leader certificates in the near future and higher qualifications beyond.
As if tackling dozens of the UK’s trickiest summits wasn’t enough, his next trip will be an expedition in the Mont Blanc Massif this summer.
Queenstown, New Zealand. "An action-packed town nestled amidst the stunning scenery of New Zealand’s South Island. A perfect destination for climbers, trekkers and adrenaline junkies alike."
