Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports, Aviemore
Our Aviemore store stocks equipment and clothing for skiers and snowboarders (September to April), climbers, campers, walkers, explorers, mountaineers and the adventurous. Nestled in the heart of the Cairngorms, the shop is only a 10 minute drive away from Cairngorm Mountain’s ski slopes, which is where most of the staff spend their days off. They also offer an extensive equipment hire service, so if you need information about the local area, or need to hire any skiing, boarding or mountain equipment, drop in or give them a call.
Martin Bell - Store Manager
Martin took up running only a few years ago, but has since become seriously addicted, completing several marathons and half marathons.
Last year Martin undertook the Lairig Ghru marathon in the Cairngorms, facing some of the most challenging conditions of the summer with most of the route submerged after heavy rainfall. He also raced in the grueling Glenmore 12, finishing an impressive eighth place with over 57 miles under his belt – a feat made all the more inspiring by the fact he suffered a damaged tendon and hairline fracture in his leg 5 hours into the run, making for a rather stoic final 7 hours!
This year Martin completed the London Marathon in a superb time, and will be tackling ‘The Wall’ – a punishing 70 mile coast-to-coast ultramarathon alongside Hadrian’s Wall.
Rothiemurcus. "Lots of great forest trails of varying difficulty which makes it great for training, and the whole area is normally deserted."
Sarah started skiing at the age of 11, and since then has completed 3 seasons in the French Alps and two in New Zealand, where she trained as a ski instructor.
Her skiing style is very technical and precise, because having taught the sport in both New Zealand and the US she likes to practice what she preaches. She’s also been on two Ellis Brigham ski tests, so if you’ve got questions about the latest skis or boots, Sarah can help.
“Haven’t really got one, because every day skiing is a good day. Although I experienced some of the best snow I’ve ever seen in La Plagne.”

Laax, Switzerland. "Laax just caters for everything. It has 4 parks, so it’s a freestyle Mecca, and the terrain is just awesome."
Climbing & Mountaineering Expert
Climbing and Mountaineering Expert Dave is a great person to know if you’re curious about ascending Scotland’s rugged peaks. Dave has been climbing since his teens, was the president of his University’s mountaineering club, and with over a decade of climbing experience under his belt, (4 years of which he has spent as an instructor), Dave’s climbing knowledge is irrefutably vast.
He has taught all over Scotland, both indoor and trad, is SPA trained, and is a specialist when it comes to the real details such as tensile strengths, fall factors and rope dynamics.
Dave is hoping to scale Mont Blanc within the next couple of years, drawn to Continental Europe’s highest mountain by the prestige and its rich history.
Braerich, Cairngorms. "This mountain is virtually as big as Ben Nevis (it’s the third highest in the UK after Ben Nevis and Ben Macdui), but it’s really remote. A great climb."
Alan started running in his schooldays taking part in X-Country runs and events. He ran his first marathon at 19, coming in at a spectacular 2hrs 40min!
Nowadays Alan is still running and taking part in Triathlons and is also the head coach of the 'Cairngorm Runners', the local running club in Aviemore. He also has two events lined up for this year – the Salomon Kielder Marathon which he took part in last year, and the Alpe D’Huez Triathlon which is one of the toughest events on the Triathlon calender. Extensive knowledge of local trails and routes within the Cairngorm National Park and first hand experience with many models of running shoes makes Alan an ideal person to help you with all your running queries.
Glenmore Forest, Aviemore.

"After my recent experience at your Aviemore store, I felt I had to write and offer my sincere appreciation to Andrew who really helped us out. I had a problem which I felt sure would ruin our holiday, but with Andrew's assistance, with my wife's snowboard, we were able to carry on and only missed a single day. Andrew's significant expertise and experience meant that the problem was resolved quickly and with minimal issue. I have long been a fan of Ellis Brigham, but the assistance provided on this occasion was really exceptional and I felt the need to pass on my appreciation."
