Having used them every day for a week while snowshoeing and walking in the Dolomites last month, I got a very good feel for these boots. They were truly out-of-the-box comfortable and never once caused any discomfort; the combination of upper flexibility and sole stiffness working well to give a good balance of comfort and support. The design of the uppers are such that my feet were well-held and stable which was particularly important when on snowshoes as the foot can move around quite a lot in difficult snow conditions. There was never any feeling of sloppiness or any need to constantly adjust the lacing system. The synthetic leather and 'Panatex' textile upper materials seemed durable and the 'X-frame' meshed nicely around the foot. The Vertos were light and dexterous making them ideal for scrambling and climbing as well as general winter walking. They are crampon-compatible and have a re-enforced interface at the heel cradle, handy if using a New-Matic style clip binding. I particularly like the little touches such as a very decent footbed (often overlooked by boot manufacturers in order to keep the costs down) and the mini cuff gaiter which helped in keeping any snow from getting into the boot. The Vertos kept my feet dry and warm and the Gore-tex lining did a good job in moisture management. After hours and days in the snow, there was barely a trace of dampness from either outside or in. TNF seem to have got the fit, performance and comfort spot on with this model.

A great boot that I enjoyed using: comfortable, supportive, precise and LIGHT!

I tested in the Alps on trails and on steeper rock terrain and ridges up to 3000m. Fit was great. No major problems despite being in them for long periods with wet socks (they weren’t leaking, I was climbing in rock shoes in the rain for a while). They held the whole foot well, I could have done with a shade more space at the outside of the toe box but that’s my blocky feet, not a problem with the boot. At first they felt as if there was relatively little support for the ankles after a period time I got used to this however. Furthermore it struck me that when hiking I didn’t find my ankle turning on uneven ground as it often does. I guess that’s the cross shaped support at the back allowing my ankle to move but supporting it at the same time. Good on various terrain, including wet rocks and tree roots. The boots were great to hike with,: supportive light and comfy. So much so I that I could see myself using these for scrambly hikes in the UK In terms of climbing they were also spot on. Good on slabby ground – much better than my Nepal Evo which are stiffer. They were also very confidence inspiring on edges despite me going for a larger size to accommodate my wider feet. Brilliant boots for scrambling and traversing rocky ridges. All in all a great boot that I enjoyed using: comfortable, supportive, precise and LIGHT!
