The Lecturers

Justine Curgenven Leading kayaker and film-maker, Justine Curgenven, thrives on expeditions. Amongst other exploits, in December 2004 she led 2 other adventurers from North Wales to become the first all-female team to kayak 1,350km around Tasmania. She also led another woman and a novice Russian kayaker on a 400 mile wilderness journey along the Pacific coast of Kamchatka in Far East Russia, whilst contending with the world's largest population of brown bears, thundering surf and the Russian military.
Justine is also a highly successful adventure film maker with credits on the BBC, National Geographic, and Channel 4. Her sea kayaking footage has to be seen to be believed! A spell binding story teller, Justine will leave audiences in awe as she describes expeditions she has undertaken, complemented by incredible film footage from her trips.

Baz Roberts summited Everest in 2004 and has had a long career leading expeditions to all four corners of the earth. Lost in Greenland covers the first winter ascents of the highest peak in the Arctic, 3693m Gunnbjorns Fjeld I where he also paraglided solo from just below the summit 1100m vertical and 8km back to advanced base camp. On the team's last night in the mountains at base camp, 2000m above sea level and 60km from the sea, the camp was raided by a polar bear. Roberts fought it off as it ripped open the front of his tent.
In this multi-media lecture, Roberts recounts the tensions, successes and near tragedy of the expedition. He delivers a candid self assessment of his contribution to the team in contrast to achieving his personal ambitions and speculates on the future of the polar bear - ursus martitimus - and why he was lost in Greenland.

Simone Moro
Eight Thousand Metres of Life is the story of Simone Moro?s long journey through his mountaineering and life-defining experiences in diverse, remote corners of the earth, narrated with the help of stunning images and filmed sequences. The starting point is a tragic accident which occurred on Christmas Day 1997 when only he survived a horrific, 800-metre fall that claimed the lives of his fellow climbers, Anatoli Boukreev and Dimitri Sobolev.
His vertical pilgrimage has taken him to Kazakhstan for the first winter ascent of the 6400-metre Marble Wall, on to the Antarctic, Kilimanjaro, Pakistan and Nanga Parbat, Broad Peak, K2 and the Caucasus. This also includes the world?s first winter ascent of Shisha Pangma in Tibet, not to mention his most recent success, the long-dreamed of Everest-Lhotse crossing via the south peak bridging these two peaks.
